Yesterday, I was filling up my tank at a gas station on a relatively busy thoroughfare in Baltimore City.

I was approached by a middle-aged gentleman who was relatively decently dressed (khakis, tucked-in polo shirt, motoring cap) and well-spoken. He was definitely not a bum, he did not smell of alcohol, he did not present any overt signs of being a drug addict. He did seem to have a slight stutter but that could simply have been nervousness.

"Excuse me, sir, may I ask you a question? I played football at [well-known local parochial high school], I am not a homeless person, but my car broke down and I need to find someone who will trust me enough to loan me $22 so I can get a cab home to my house in [not bad working class neighborhood across town]."

I thought it would be an interesting experiment, (at least that's what I told myself) so I gave him $25. He went out of the way to ask if I had a business card (I did) and he said he would mail me the money this morning. He thanked me profusely and I said "surprise me."

It was only when I got home that my fiancee pointed out that now this dude has my $25 and knows where I work and what my name is.

Vote, and discuss.

Poal fail, last option should have been, "YOU GON' GET RAPED HON!" And of course, that is the correct answer to your quandry.

Sounded rehearsed to me with the name-dropping of local landmarks. Expect to find this guy sitting at your desk on Monday morning and answering to the name Douglas.

Your bosses don't look like these guys, do they?

Reminds me of something that happened to me once.

When I was younger, and far more naive than I am now, I fell pray to a few different types of scams similar to these. One day while waiting for the bus, a man approached me and informed me that he was raising money for the upcoming "AIDS Walk". He wanted to know if I would be so kind as to help him in this endeavor. I wrote down my name (no address or phone number) on his pledge sheet and gave him $5 cash. When I got to the office that morning I googled "Chicago AIDS Walk" and found out that it had occurred two months ago. As a result of this I made a pledge to myself which I have kept to this day, which is I don't give out money...ever...for any reason.

Something somewhat similar happened to me once. I just didn't give the guy anything and left.
