Maybe they'll look nice on a middle aged guy... not a younger guy. Pattern, color, and also the cut seems like it might be quite baggy.

Absolutely! But I would stick to a plain white shirt, although some could pull off something more daring on top.

Absolutely! With a navy (or any solid color) DB blazer. Plain white shirt with a tie.

I dig the fabric. If the fit was right, I would sure as hell wear them. I even have a pair much like that- olive with a similar size check, though the check isn't quite as bold. Thinner line and a light blue.

And this coming from a younger guy. C'mon, what's with the young guy/old guy nonsense? Yes, your grandfather might have worn something like that. Isn't that the entire point of timeless style?
