Your plan must be to be desesperate to quit...

That is the only one really working...

If you do have asthma , quit...

I did suffer too badly when I was playing rugby but now I have to take my medications seriously and I did quit 12 years ago.

i've tried many times, so far mebe 6 mths without, give or take.

think it's not about giving up cigarettes. About giving up the next cigarette. i.e. just one at a time - and gradually I thought less and less about it

Very true until you realize how much it costs and how smelly your clothes are and you're then finally on the right track..

It can smell good when you are walking by but it always smells awful once they've finished and it lingers on their clothes/skin.

I've smoked regularly (daily, from about a quarter pack to two packs a day) continuously for 15 years - I'm 29 though. :fu: I tried the patch several years ago but it didn't really work out for me that well, I think I am gonna try some intense regimented exercise and scheduled living to see if that helps. I've lived continuously for 15 years in places where I can legally light up everywhere I want to besides the obvious places (hospitals, public buildings - the offices I worked at though had smoking lounges), but going back to the USA means not being able to smoke in bars, having smoking areas in restaurants - having those in Asia have been keeping my smoking habit alive all along. I think if I didn't have convenient places to smoke, I'd be down to about 3-5 smokes a day. that is what happened to me all summer when I traveled between LA and NYC and then to Tokyo, where smoking inside and even outside (in Japan) is regulated.

Lots of good advice here. I was a pretty steady smoker from my mid teens to age 28, then smoked on and off for the next 10 years. I finally quit a year ago using Allen Carr's book. The bottom line is that you have to change your mentality about smoking. You can't consider smoking this awesome thing that you just won't do anymore. Smoking is pleasurable in the same way it feels good to take off shoes that are too small. You could revel in how good it feels to take those shoes off 10-15 times a day, or you could wear shoes that fit. Once you realize that you are in fact not giving anything up, you are golden. No mints, no dip, no saving the money previously spent on smokes for new ties. Just the reality that you managed to live the first 15-18 years of your life without cigarettes and 80% of the world manages to get by without smoking. My best friend just quit two months ago after smoking for 20 years. You can do it too.

6 months can be a danger period, you think you have it beaten and you can handle one or two drunken smokes, you can't.

Btw, when you fell off the wagon at 4 months, what happened? Drunken incident as implied above?
