Importing/Exporting...anyone got experience in this sector?

It seems to me that unless you're importing/exporting something substantial, ie rice from Asia...this field seems to be quite shaky. I read a book on this industry, and still don't fully comprehend it.

If anyone with experience in this field can chime in, I'd greatly appreciate it. smile.gif

I have some experience with importing a high value vegetable product from Mexico, however the barriers to entry in that market are quite lethal.

Just the basic logistics of it such as what do you import/export, how do you find your customers, how many hours do you work, etc.

In my head, I see that if you're a small timer and are importing what's hot at the moment, you're going to have a pretty hard time making consistent income.

You have to import something that makes you unique as a seller. Either no one can get it or no one can match your pricing. Customers can be word of mouth, trade shows, chambers of commerce, etc.

Hours per week is such a worthless question. You will work lots of hours at whatever job you're passionate about. If you're good at your job and work hard, you'll be successful. Mowing lawns or doing M&As...

Importing something that no one has is easier than done because you can now be anywhere in the world in 24 hours.

I know hours worked per week was a stupid question, but I thought I'd throw it in anyway, haha.

I read books on different aspects of business, ie investing, real estate, and this importing/exporting thing...I still don't fully comprehend.

Working hard is just one of the aspects of it.

At my work, a manufacturing company, there are stories of kids moving up from the washing dishes to becoming a supervisor. But that's where you max out.

I'll post a more detailed reply later when I'm home.

Thanks for the reply though...keeping me busy at work.
