Tips for buying major appliances?

Thread Starter
I'm buying some appliances for my new condo, and I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed by the myriad options. Right now my focus is on the washer dryer combo, but I'll also be replacing our refrigerator, dishwasher and TV in the next few months. Any tips? What's your favorite place to buy major appliances? In your experience, what are the most and least reliable brands?

I don't want this to get too deep into TVs, I'm pretty sure there are multiple threads on that subject, but I didn't find much when I tried to look into washers and dryers - in fact, any suggestions for good forums that would discuss them?

For things like washer dryer combos size makes a big difference. The space for my washer/dryer in my condo was very small so it limited me quite a bit. I just knew I wanted HE and I needed to get a ventless one because there is no exhaust. Bosch makes a good one and most people in my building went with it and are happy with it. As for kitchen appliances I find it best to ask a chef. If you don't know any ask somebody who really enjoys cooking. For a refrigerator since it is the primary electricity sucker year round and probably costs about $25 to $30 per month to run (in NYC) I would try and look for one that saves the most energy. Same on the dishwasher.

Depending on where you are located:
I online priced at AJ Madisons, then went to a store I knew would price match +10%.
I got that quote in writing then went to another price matching place....basically saved 20% off of the original super low AJ Madison price.

I would buy as much as you can at once, the consolodation boosts your buying power and ability to negotiate as dealers have different margins on different lines and you can then get a master quote where they discount some areas deeper than others.

Hope that helps.
