100% sure they are NOT shell cordovan.

Fine creases on the vamp is the tell-tale sign.

Cool, well I overpaid somewhat, wasn't sure if they even made Allen Edmonds Macneils in burgandy without being cordovan.

I don't think they're shell. If you look at the model number inside the shoe in one of the pictures, it's 9157. 9097 is the model number for the cordovan MacNeils. 9107 is the black corrected-grain shoe. Thus, it seems reasonable to conclude that the 91-- models would be the leather versions, and the 90-- the cordovan (although not all cordovan AEs have a different second digit in the model number...). The third digit gives the color, and is usually 0 for black. Burgundy is admittedly not necessarily a 5, but the rest of my theory holds up. Plus, what the Doc said is the most obvious data point. Those don't look like cordovan creases.

EDIT: They don't make burgundy calfskin MacNeils any more, but that doesn't mean they didn't in the past.

If you want to know for sure, call AE and give them the model number and they will tell you. I did that before with a pair of Macneils that I bought on ebay (turned out they were cordovan). By the looks of those, I'm with everyone else - the creasing indicates they are not cordovan.

I will probably do that. I now feel like I overpaid hoping to get a steal and then refurb them. Oh well, live and learn.

If you go by Grimslade's theory, those are calf as the number looks to be 9107.

It looks like 91x7, it's true. But they look like cordovan. And the seller says they're cordovan, unlike in Lexloci's auction.

Well, it's what I get for assuming the seller might not know what they had--I mean "wishful thinking". The thing that sort of convinced me was the description "really really thick leather" and the burgundy colored macneil.

I will call AE tomorrow and find out.

By the way, the other shoes I bought and posted about a few weeks ago turned out to Cheaney's, they are just a tad too snug across the toe, but otherwise they are pretty nice.

Good sleuthing, grimslade. I guess we'll find out when they get here.
