I think what people are saying is that there's more cheap shots because there are less enforcers. Players wouldn't be getting as many head shots if the offenders knew that they were going to get their ass kicked. I guess it's more along the lines of "let the players enforce themselves".
For the record, I don't really have an opinion either way. I'm just pointing that out.
I was thinking more along the lines of shoulder pads.

As well.

If only the Caps played Montreal more often their road record to be so terrible. Tomorrow against Winnipeg marks a full year since Scott Gomez has scored a goal in the NHL.

Even worse stat:

Sam Gagner surpassed Gomez's point total for the season in one game.

How the hell did Zac Rinaldo only get a fine for slew footing Parise tonight? That's gotta be worth a couple of games, slew footing is one of the dirtiest things you can do to another player. Even on a league minimum salary is 2500 bucks fine really going to prevent that crap. Either police the league in a meaningful manner or let the biggest dude on the Devils take a piece out of Rinaldo without throwing the book at him for retaliation. I was surprised to see Kovalchuk drop the gloves after that. He mug have gotten lucky but he threw a nice knockout punch.

You'd think the removal of the instigator penalty would lead to less dirty hitting but I'm not so sure. I think it owuld just lead to more fights after big, clean hits are thrown. Think about how many times fights start after a clean hit already, with the threat of the instigator. I think with the state of mind that many of these players have today a repeal of the instigator may lead to more Carcillo v Gaborik fights, where guy would drop the gloves with more skilled players without fear of getting any additional sanctions. If you think about it, the instigator penalty really shouldn't be a deterrent if you really feel a team mate has been aggrieved.

I agree on shoulder and elbow pads, and even visors and helmet technology leads players into a false sense of security. Guys are a lot more reckless with high hits because the heads are so well protected. Look at the NFL. Helmets n the NFL are super, but it leads to two things 1) more BIG hit injuries (guys are so unafraid to simply fly around recklessly) AND 2) the build up concussion, which is the greatest threat to the athletes today, and no matter how great the helmet is, its those small impacts of the brain on the skull that add up.

Still no Rangers on TV for me, been over a month now. I'm hoping that the Islanders move to Brooklyn, I'm so fed up with the games the organization is playing with its non "blue-blooded" fans. The cheapest season ticket at the Garden is $6400 for regular season only, playoffs, if the team advances into the SCF will be around $10K on top of that...now they take them off of TV? I remember Sam and JD bitching about the Wertz's management style in Chicago, saying how it was unfair to the fans that Hawk home games weren't televised, in order to get them to buy season tickets. To me this is no different, in fact, it may even be worse, because we have NO affordable options to watch our team. And don't give me "the internet". Most live streams SUCK, and watching on your pc or laptop is no where near watching on a big screen in your living room. As each day passes, and more games miss, I feel more and more disconnected as a fan, and there are tens of thousands like me. Shame on NYR and MSG.

Although you have my sympathy, ticket prices are getting crazy in all large market. Here in Montreal it's gotten almost laughable. Something like 20K for decent season tickets and a few years ago scalped tickets for a Round 2 series were going for 3K.....in the upper deck. I know it's Montreal, but everyone is priced out besides the super rich and the Superfans who don't mind paying 1/10th of their year's income to watch a playoff game.

At least TV coverage is good though. We have all games on RDS, which is basic cable, and plenty of TSN and CBC as well so we don't get as shafted in that regard.

I understand the ticket prices...the demand is there. While it sucks I won't be able to share with my son what i had with my dad, at least watching on TV and maybe getting to see 3 or 4 games a year wasn't out of the question. I don't like that a team I've given my heart, sweat and tears to is choosing to try and implement the same demand based economic practices on television coverage. Honestly, i woudl pay to see them on TV, not sure how much, but I would. The fact that i can't KILLS me.

It's a raw deal, I agree.

I have no problem with sports franchises making money, but I think there needs to be an understanding amongst owners and the league that some teams, especially those with a longstanding presence in their hometown, have a certain duty towards the community. I think this includes making an effort to provide affordable tickets for families and those of lower incomes who want to watch a live game once in awhile as well as affordable access to games on television.

It also failed absolutely miserably. I don't see why it should work any better in New York. This is the NHL. If you don't put it on TV for all your fans to see, people will pretty much forget you have a team.
