Nor is the problem confined to Italy. Spain and Greece are also abandoning the traditional Mediterranean diet and lifestyle and seeing much heavier young people.

You know that the "traditional Mediterranean diet" is high in carbs and low in meat, right?

No doubt weights are climbing for kids. It's not to hard to find 40 + year old mothers in better shape then their 20s something daughters.

OTOH BMI averages are more or less flat over the last 20+ years. There are more obese people but there are also more fairly in shape people.

I dispute the claim people are eating more. People are eating more crap and doing less. But I seriously doubt the amount of food is up. Most of the heavy guys I know don't eat very much. A few eat less then I do.

A burger and fries and a drink costs around $5. One can easily eat a better meal for the same price.

I agree that people are doing less and eating more unhealthy. Sitting on their computers all day, not even being productive.

People that are in shape tend to be in a lot better shape now a days due to the amount of information available on the web. (people like myself)

My biggest problem, is women, young women (my age group, late teens early twenties) tend to be in real shit shape but don't think they are because people are too afraid to tell them and if they are told they're fat they run to their other fat out of shape lazy ass girlfriends that say they aren't fat and can eat all the ice cream they want! well you can have each other cause ur gross and im not going to fuck you.

If you ever get serious about your health, a good salad will taste amazing and fast food will make you feel like your dieing.

I work hard for my body! If you want it you need to work hard for yours too! or have great genes and be really hot.

I also don't like fat people (with the exception of people with medical problems that cause them to be in poor shape, not medical problems caused by being in poor shape-i have no sympathy for them) , the shape that you are in definitely says something about you. If you are in poor shape, it means that you don't care about your health or your image. You are not as disciplined and less likely to work hard, and your standard of working hard tends to be lower. The first thing I see when I meet someone is their body, if you are out of shape I am already judging you in a negative way!

Those are just my thoughts, I tend to be harsh, one of my biggest turn-offs is women with poor posture. you can say that is ridiculous, but it is related to not having developed back muscles to hold yourself up - which is related to being in terrible fucken shape!

The problem will never be as endemic as in other Westernised countries in Italy. The difficulty here is that it is simply too expensive to eat badly - far too expensive. In London I had what I would have called a rather ordinary diet and never touched any ready made meals or take away food and made everything myself. I lost a lot of weight after moving to Italy simply because the type of food that one would usually eat just isn't available here. And although I wouldn't touch them, ready made meals are actually a lot more expensive than their counterpart fresh ingredients. The meat selection is very very low, I know of perhaps two butchers in Venice. What is available, however, are lots of vegetables, fish, and of course pasta very cheaply. It is impossible to re-create most 'bad food' meals from scratch here and therein lies the problem with this idea that Italy will crumble into a nation of obese people.

I now eat red meat approximately two or three times a month, and not out of choice, but simply because you cannot find it for a non-stupid price. This is, of course, a regional thing as people in Veneto do not eat as much red meat as say those in Firenze, yet it is still the case in the wider parts of Italy I have been to. This could be linked also to inflation, as when I took my Italian girlfriend to one of the most expensive supermarkets in central London, she was going crazy about how cheap everything was...

Italians do eat less meat but there is plenty of meat available. It's just considered a second so the size of portions are smaller then many North Americans are used to. Also more types of meat then are available commonly in North America. The meat fridges in the large supermarkets are no smaller then North America. They have to be big when they contain pork, horse, rabbit, beef and chicken. That's the common stuff. I know small towns (less then 1000 people) with two butchers.

OTOH there is plenty of bad cheap food. Chip pizza shog[1].gif I guess the Italian version of a chip buttie.

I think one difference is most Italians won't eat something that tastes like crap just because it's cheap or easy.

Is this chip pizza?
