Crime & the Arts: The Crime Genre in Literature & Film

I'm fascinated with criminals and from what I can tell so is everyone else. So, in an attempt to prompt all sorts of trading of all things criminal and related I've started this thread.

My submissions?

Photography: Anton Kusters, who took a very artful documentarian approach to his time spent with the Yakuza http://www.fotovisura.com/user/antonkusters/viewfullpage/893-yakuza

Film: Pale Flower, Heat, Le Samourai, The Hustler & L'enfant

Comics (or graphic novel for you sensitive types): Criminal. I can not stress how awesome Ed Brubaker is right now. I'll take Tracy Lawless over Chili Palmer anyday.

Lit: Young Stalin & The Man in the Rockafeller Suit, both being true and utterly insane.

Anyhoo, feel free to make contributions, argue over crime medium aesthetics, why I'm an idiot for thinking Elmore Leonard books make better Steven Soderbergh films, and maybe even attempt to address why normal people are so compulsively drawn to criminals in popular culture. That stuff.

Films: Rififi, Bob le Flambeur, a number of films by Takeshi Kitano.

Lit: Seems like you're into the true crime genre. You could check this out: http://www.amazon.com/True-Crime-Anthology-Harold-Schechter/dp/1598530313
If you're into literature in general that deals with the topic of crime, then there's almost no limit on what you might be interested in (Macbeth, Book II of Orlando Innamorato, Poe and subsequent detective fiction, and--most obviously--Crime and Punishment).

Good suggestions. Also, I'm not sure if I'm into true crime more so then the other sub-genres, but I often find that crime writers (even the good ones) are sort of prone to this sort of whimsy I don't like. For instance, Donald Westlake's Parker stuff. As much as I dig the character and the briskness of the writing, Parker always does some ridiculous heist that I can't get into, despite my suspended disbelief. That said, it might be a ridiculous bias of mine, I mean I like Heat and the armored car and bank robberies in the film are relatively far fetched as reality goes.

And once again, great suggestions. I've been meaning to check out Riffi for a long time now. If my connection wasn't so appalling I'd stream it on Netflix.

Ever read any of John Sandford's Prey series? Some aspects are a little unrealistic, but the novels are quite enjoyable.

Checked a while back and Netflix isn't streaming it anymore. Should have it come in the male relatively soon. Out of curiosity, what do you like about it?

Hard to answer your question because I like it on any number of levels. Great film noir style, great characters, and a brisk plot.
