A paupers briefcase?

Ok, so I want to get a new briefcase for work, I'd want it to be leather and be dark brown in colour. I basically have no idea on what's good or bad, who makes good quality products and who doesn't etc. but I know I don't want an attaché case. Obviously money permitting I'd go and buy a nice SAB case or something but I'm only a wee ****** at 22 so I'll have to do with a more modest budget for now.

I'm UK based so anything that I can get here would be great but for the sake of the majority I'll say I'd like to spend around $400. So the question I put to you all would be, what you would buy given my circumstances? I am aware of Saddleback but would love some more variety to choose from!

They are some cheap ones at $100-200 range (new and used) that will easily last you that long.

Laugh if you like but consider Kenneth Cole Reaction. They may have what you want, in leather and would be well under your budget.

I was going to mention Saddleback but the OP stated he is 22 yrs old. At that age, a nice Saddleback has a high chance of being stolen but would be a good choice when he hits 30. Just my opinion on it. If careful and vigilant, I would agree go with Saddleback. A1 quality.

Well I'd be mainly taking it to & from work (I work in the City) so theft is unlikely. It seems Saddlebacks are very much preferred then, what I'd like to know then is what makes the Saddlebacks a better buy than others at that price point? Another questions would be at what price point would you have to go to consider buying a different briefcase?

get vintage (unused old stock) from ebay, look for: Schlesinger, Atlas, Korchmar. Under $200, very possibly under $50

The reassurance of quality should be enough. Dave not only boasts the indestructibility of the product, he also guarantees it with a hundred year warranty. Buying a saddleback may be costly at first but without the need to buy a new bag, you'll be saving for years to come. Simply buy one bag and never have to buy another.

Apart from saddleback, some SF members consider customhide bags as an alternative. But after several year, you may need to replace it cause of wear and tear. Although you can send them back for repairs, its not worth the trouble. http://www.customhide.com/

I find the Saddleback bags a bit rustic for a professional work environment.

you will want to buy another as soon as you realize how ugly it is
