How many people here actually use them?

This thread would be shorter if you asked who on here didn't use them.

You don't know the right people.

Cedar is not native to Europe, so Europeans tend to use Beech which is.

Couldn't agree more.

I should hope everyone. The people you know who "don't" use them probably don't own things nice enough that will stand the test of time. So regardless of shoe tree use they will be shit in a year. If you buy nice shoes and care for them well they can last for years and years. I have heard people on this thread talk about how they have had shoes for 10 years that are still in great shape.... ask them if they use trees.

I concur. I have shoes more than ten years and still very wearable and part of my rotation. I have shoe trees for all, even my loafers and casual shoes.

I'm considering planting one in my back yard. Can anyone suggest a good Lobbscaper?

I have always tried to use cedarwood but the europeans never seem to use cedar ;-(

Grubby - As long as they are wood it doesn't much matter what kind.

Metal doesn't absorb moisture - so it's not considered to be as desirable.

Be sure to put the trees in as soon as you take off your shoes - cause they are warm and moist from your feet which makes the leather flexible. Putting them in after the shoe has already dried out is of limited value.
