Best time to go shopping for winter deals? - Page 2

what do you have to do to get invited to the private sales I wonder? I'd certainly go up to the DC and surrounding area stores if they made it worth my while.
Buy something there.  When ringing up your purchases, the sales clerk will generally ask you if you would like to be put on the store's mailing list (and if he/she doesn't ask, you can always request to be put on the list).  As a result of my purchases, I have been getting invitations through the mail and over the phone for private sales at Bloomingdale's, Off Fifth, and Barney's New York Outlet.

is it just a ploy by the stores to play up the "private' aspect of it, or can you find really good deals during them?

I think they're a bit of a scam.  Based upon my experience, the prices aren't any better.  A private sale is not advertised to the general public, so in theory the selection should be better, but there's nothing stopping someone who wasn't "invited" but happens to be at the store during the private sale from shopping as well.

Bloomingdale's is having a HUGE sale this weekend. 30-40%off almost everything. What I bought: Canalli DB, peak lapel, wool overcoat; Retail $1295, sale price $720. Western style, Diesel denim shirt w/snap buttons; Retail $159, sale price $29... It's sales like this one that make me vow to NEVER pay retail on anything.

Ouch, that hurts. I bought that Diesel shirt at retail. It was a S/S 2002 item. Well, at least I got alot of wear out of it...

and I never do unless it's under $100, 150 bucks. A) I don't have the money to, and b) odds are you can get it cheaper if you wait in a lot of cases.

I hate it when that happens. Yeah, private sales aren't always really "private." Most of the time, it's just an unadvertised sale. But some are private. I just got an invitation to a private sale at Tod's that you have to RSVP for. Wine, cheese will be served...:-)

I get a lot of invitations for Zegna. They are usually in New York, and the invitation states that it is for the new designs, and whatnot.

Went to Emporio Armani today and what a great sale they're having. It's an unadvertised sale starting Dec. 2. Everything in the store will be 40% off. I already pre-saled an overcoat and two sweaters; can't wait to pick them up next week. The salesmen told me they will start advertising the sale on Dec. 5, so I'd get there before then, if you plan on purchasing anything. This sale applies to all Manhattan locations, I'm not sure about elsewhere.

Went to a couple stores this weekend, and everywhere is having at least decent sales, some them great sales. Prada is even having a sale. Anything with an orange dot on the price tag is 30% off. Even handbags at Gucci and Prada were on sale--usually the last things to go on sale. Guess retail has been hurting this year. I know I personally have spent less.
