Helping the less fortunate: Yea or Nay?

We’ve all been in this position; You pull up to a red light, look to your right, and see a homeless man asking for some spare change. What do you do?

Story that sort of related:

The other day I was at gas station at around 2300 and some guy came up to me asking for some money because his daughter was blah blah blah. After he was done ranting, I stabbed him in the eye and crushed his dog (American Psycho reference). Just kidding. Instead of being an asshole, I took some money, twenty bucks, out of a nearby ATM and gave it to him.
I don’t know if should feel cheated or good about this. Help me make up my mind.

Nothing wrong with helping the less fortunate but honestly, 20 bucks seems like a lot. I would have given him a loonie (a toonie if I was feeling especially generous).

^ Let's be honest. It probably went to glass.

I do not give him anything. he has 2 arms and 2 legs and cannot make his own money or try to earn it.

True story - I had the opposite once. I had a homeless woman come up to me and hand me a $20. She said "you gave me money once and now I'm giving it back". Then she began singing opera in a high soprano voice inside the Starbucks I was in. I tried to give her the money back but she steadfastly refused. I finally ended up dropping it inside one of the bags in her shopping cart while she wasn't looking.

Will I give? Rarely - sometimes I'll go into a fast food place and bring out a meal for someone. In Santa Monica, I swear the homeless outnumber the residents.

You got taken.

I would not give money to panhandlers or the homeless. I do not contribute to the vices of others, my own vices are expensive enough.

You should have given him a sub or a bottle of water or something. That way, you know he won't spend the moolah on harmful substances.

You're asking a question that has been answered for thousands of years.

Depends on my mood and if I have any small bills on me.

that requires more time and effort than I willing to dispense.

I'll bet she was pissed when she found those $20. It's funny how she recognized you though; don't be surprised if she hits you up later for some cash.
