Advice please : beige/tan suit with dark red gingham shirt

Hi

I recently bought a beige suit to wear to a friend's wedding this summer. I was planning to wear it with a dark red gingham shirt and black or navy plain or knitted although I'm now having doubts. (In particular people have commented that the black tie looks to severe or may have negative connotations i.e. Mourning the lose of my friend)

I'd be interested to hear people's thoughts and/or suggestions.

Thanks

Yea I'm having a hard time seeing a black tie with that outfit myself, regardless of the occasion. Navy would probably be sharp, though, esp a knitted.

I think Acecow and NYR have pulled off similar red gingham looks. Cough.

A navy knit tie would look better with a gingham imo. Though it's hard to say without any images of the suit and shirt to begin with.

red gingham and a dark solid tie doesn't seem appropriate for a wedding... I'm not saying a variation of the look can't work, but it's a little too GQ/photoshoot/trytoohard IMO.

here's Phat Guido doing it with a navy tie

That looks good to me.. If you are pulling it like that, it would be great. If the setting of the wedding is supposed to be this 'casual', I say go for it.

Different shirt, but cool look.

sure, it's a cool look, but I think a bit too flashy and immature for a wedding... I'd prefer light blue gingham with a navy tie, or brown, etc...

or combo of both

If its an outside, daytime wedding (or more casual), I think it could work. However, I would do a blue gingham with navy knit.

This would be suitable for an outdoor wedding, especially with the heatwave.

Very nice - "refined modern" at its best.

Thanks guys, I'll think I'll switch to blue as suggested!

Unfortunately I couldn't find a nice blue gingham at short notice in my local shops... So have opted for a fine check instead with a navy tie ( http://db.tt/tj5Qmtt for photo).

All that is left now is to enter the minefield that is picking a matching pocket square...
