I live about a 2 minute walk from a couple of really nice places:

A proper boozer, one of the best selections of real ales you'll find in London and not a single fizzy lager on tap.

A fun pub that's busy virtually every night. It's a great place to have Sunday lunch or relax in the evening after work. They also do a fun quiz and have a nice BBQ in the garden at weekends.

My favorite bar right now is a place that will be less than a block away from where I'm living starting September 1. It's a hipster-esque bar, but their kitchen (with a typical pub menu) is open till 2, they have 32 beers on tap (and only 5 of them are bud/miller/coors swill) and I've gotten to know most of the people who work there.

Plus their specials rule. $3.50 for a pint of anything on tap on saturdays, half off drinks on tuesday (and half off everything during happy hour every day). Love that place, and have spent many a night with anywhere from a lady to a group of 40 people and it's always been a blast.

The absolute closest is a pizza place that is widely regarded as one of the best in the Detroit area (Buddy's Pizza). Going the other direction, about a mile and a half, there is a little downtown area with some very nice restaurants and bars including one of the area's only 4-star restaurants and the bar where Miguel Cabrera likes to go before he beats his wife and costs Tigers fans a spot in the playoffs.

As I am a cheap bastard when it comes to my food, I'm more a fan of the pizza place than the upscale establishments at the other end of town.

The absolute closest restaurant is a more upscale contemporary American restaurant. It's literally five steps from my building, but I don't eat there that often. As for bars, there is a hipster bar twenty paces from my door, but I've only been there once.

When I lived in Manhattan, the closest restaurant was a 3 star Michelin (Daniel), and we ate there a fair bit, but I wouldn't say it was regularly. I much prefer casual dining, since it makes those Michelin-starred excursions all the more special.

Here in Beijing it's an awful 24 hour place that I avoid if at all possible. In Kunming, it's a golf club, where we'll eat if we're feeling lazy. In New York, at my parents place it's a cheap Chinese delivery place used for drunken moments, at one of my friends' places which I stay at often it's Cafetaria, one of those really club goer filled 24 hour places for more expensive drunken moments, and if it's at my other friends' place which I also almost live at, it's Max Brenners which I go to once every 2 weeks or so regardless.
