The first does look a bit short, and the second does look a bit long, but it's probably worth noting that if you're wearing belted trousers, these things can really change throughout the day as your trousers adjust higher or lower on your hips. In real life, we're not all posing perfectly for fit pics, and clothes can really move around.

^^ if the leg opening is too narrow, the bottom of the trousers just stack up on top of your shoes regardless of the break.

Speaking of which, if one has high arches, this is even a greater problem. I'm 6'2" with high arches. Any opening less than 9.25 inches and I have the "stacking" problem.

An interesting opinion on the existence of a rule regarding trouser opening was proposed by my alterations tailor. He suggests that the "proper" opening is European shoe size minus 23, and translates that to centimeters. For example I wear an EU 42 (-23=)19cm opening. This rule certainly seems to flatter, and is the standard I've been going by for the last two years. 18cm don't allow any calf movement, 20 seem to sag over my shoes. Note that there should be no break, and 4cm cuffs are beneficial to the look.

What really boggles my mind is how much difference 1 cm does in leg opening. I don't have experience with suits, but I'm always changing opinions. I like the look of my Levis 501 which have 20 cms but I also like my Levis 511 which has a leg opening of 18 cms. I also have chinos with 18 cms (and a higher rise) and 19 cms and I like them both. It really depends on my mood and if I want to dress more classically or more "fashiony".

It boils down to shoe choice. Sleeker shoes just look bad IMO with anything over 20 cm on me. Derbies or boots allow for larger openings.

I'm 6'2" and 185lbs with an 11.5 shoe size. I just measured the pants from Chris Despos: 9". My RLBL pants: 9". My bespoke work from Bangkok: 9". I think it is safe to say I prefer 9" for my frame and so do those that make my clothes.

I have similar measurements except I'm 6'2" 200lb, size 12 feet. For dress trousers, anything less than 8.75" and I can't get a proper crease in the trouser to last more than half a day. For casual pants, chinos, and denim 7.75-8.25"

I'm 5'10 with size 10 feet and wear 7.5-7.75 for chinos and 8-8.25 for dressier trousers. For me, there isn't one ideal proportion for all types of trousers. For instance, I have a pair of chinos and a pair of flannels with the same hem opening (8.25). The flannels look well proportioned while the chinos look a sloppy. The absence of a trouser crease allows the excess to billow outwards rather than gather at the front and back. That's my theory at least.

5'10", 145lbs, 9D foot. Recently asked my tailor to make me a pair of odd trousers with an 8" opening, and he baulked (but in a friendly way). Was really reluctant to go less than 8.5", so we compromised with 8.25", with a promise that he'll narrow them to 8" if I feel the need later.

He said narrower trousers give men clown feet, then he looked at my pants and said "who made those?" I answered, "some Italian tailor I use." He paused for a moment and said "well, yea, they don't look toooo bad with those shoes." I couldn't tell if he was being honest, since he's an exceedingly polite man, but I thought the whole thing was funny.

Anyway, agree @burghler that a lot probably depends on the cloth.

5'10", 150 lbs, size 8.5 shoe. I tend to shoot for about 8" with trousers, and around 7.75" with denim and chinos. I have a couple pairs of chinos with 7.5" openings but that's as small as I'll go. I'm a skinny guy with thin legs and small-ish feet, and even I feel like a carrot with 7.5" pants. I think the guys who taper their trousers past that have never seen their reflection from the side.

For reference, 8" opening on some Howard Yount trous (please excuse the messed up shoelaces). I think these look pretty slim, all things considered.
