today i want out to lunch for a friends bday, in a big party ( like 10 of us ). like most restaurants large parties incur an automatic gratuity, in this case 20%. at the end of lunch one of the girls freaked out over this and actually refused to pay the 20% tip part of her bill. ruined the lunch.

When I visit my folks, I generally get into big fights with them (esp. my mom) about tipping at restaurants. They didn't grow up in a culture where tipping was the norm, and we were dirt poor for a while and didn't go out to eat very much. They've never really gotten used to the idea.

My parents tip well, when warranted. They were in town this last week, and we went into a restaurant that does really good Thai food, although it isn't a Thai place. My dad is a vegetarian and gets really sick if he eats animal meat, so he told the waitress to just have the cook make him something thai, make it vegetarian, make it good, and make it spicy. The cook loved it (we all love that kinda thing) and made the dish really well. His dish was better than either of the things my mother and I ordered off the menu. So we left a nice tip for the waitress and my dad bought a beer for the cook. :slayer: My parents get it.

what pisses me off the most is that we were there for someones birthday - why are you gonna ruin the lunch by bitching about service and tipping for 20 minutes? and it's not like this is an expensive restaurant, I think I paid $13 (with tip) for lunch.

i am a really good tipper when warranted.....and a very good tipper all the time....i get it!
i can shut u out though...i was out with my boy last summer at a place around where i live and we ordered some car bombs: baileys/guinness/jameson. so we notice that the girl is giving us a basic whiskey(technically correct) but still charging us regular price(i forget jow much.) so i call her on it(the place is empty.) ask if they don't have jameson(i see the bottle on the shelf.) she says(stuttering)...oh, whatever whiskey that i use i would charge you the same price.so i say, then use jameson....we ordered 1 more round and left her nada as she was trying to beat us by using a basic whiskey and charging jameson $$.

Dude, can your parents go to dinner with my parents and enlighten them re: American restaurant culture?

I grew up in places where tipping wasn't the norm but since moving to N. America, I tip out of respect. I'll tip more if the waitress is worth looking at.

she was really unpleasant. the whole lunch was so awkward - the type of thing when you have people from 2 really disparate social circles and 99% of the conversation is really stilted and forced.

How much of the mindset is based on the fact that it is the "norm" to tip nowadays? Do waiters/waitresses often feel like they can go through the motions(skate by with no real knowledge of drinks/food offered at establishment) and still expect tips?

Very good article about tipping

BTW, that girl sounds like a __________ (insert any derogatory comment here).
