people who bitch about tipping are scum? - Page 31

Which part do you mean when referring to not understanding your social norms? The really low loan for waiters? I don't understand why cleaners get 4.50€ or less per hour without any tipping here in eastern Germany either. Let alone the semi-illegal "imported" chinese restaurant workers who don't have social backup, live in a shithole and work 60-70 hours per week for 300-400€ per month.
Just saying that it seems to compensate by the tipping. In the US, one gets very few money, but at least there are quite a few people tipping generously. In Germany, one gets few money - not enough to live but considerably more than in the US - but therefore less tipping is normal. Same outcome.

hahaha!!! its very possible that why tipping in other countries is a smaller percentage than the US is because the servers are paid more in those countries??

it seems like americans tip to subsidize the servers paycheck (if you knew the servers were being paid a normal amount would you still tip??), maybe that isn't necessary in other countries.

I wasn't really responding to you about the norms, but to other Europeans like Britalian. You do seem to understand. FWIW, I don't know how it became this way, but the expected wage for a server includes tips. None of them believe they are being hired for 2.50/hr. In nice restaurants they can make 100k/year, and in less nice, much less. I don't know if it averages out to be equivalent to Europe. In reality, like all things done in that comparison, I imagine the highs are higher here, and the lows are lower here.

People also have to remember that, depending on the restaurant, up to 20% of waiting staff's wage goes toward bartenders/busers/food runners/cooks. Even at some sushi restaurants, 50% of the waiting staff's wage goes to cooks.

US aside...

In Chile, tipping for food is 10%. You don't tip taxi drivers.

I had a taxi driver load his car full of stuff I purchased and then helped me take it out of the car. I gave him a 2 dollar tip. He was really happy and you could tell he rarely receives that much tip.

I paid 40 bucks for a shuttle from the airport and gave the driver a 6 dollar tip. He told me, while I was fishing in my pocket for money, that the tip wasn't necessary. He felt bad I had to pay that much for the shuttle. I still gave him the tip and he was really happy.

In Japan, tipping isn't customary anywhere, as far as I saw. I had the best service at restaurants, better than nearly all my experiences in the US. Things were more expensive over there, and I presumed that they included gratuity in the prices at the restaurants. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Here's my idea: all restaurants should do what they do in Japan. Pay your waiters/bus boys/hosts/etc more and raise the price of the items. Don't ask for tips. If people are feeling extra generous or had an exceptional experience, they can tip on top of this. Problem solved and cheap entitled assholes who don't pay the minimum 15-20% gratuity won't cause problems.

how does the establishment get away with paying so little depending on the tips... lets say one night all the non-tipping A holes turn up, then the servers have to find another way to pay the rent?? how can it be that no-one enforces a minimum wage that must be paid and tips for good service is a bonus. i don't get it!!!!! bored.gif

probabaly because no one complains... think about from the info here it seems that waiters get paid considerably more than minimum wage with the current system in place,( i know prada will flip out) for what essentially is a minimum wage job. the restaurants are not obligated to pay high salaries because the customers are acostumed to pay the wage of the waiters.

I won't flip out. I'll just assume that you are actually ignorant from now on.

lets play,
here are some minimum wage jobs
carpenters helper
construction grunt
maid

now at least the last two are assuredly minimum wage jobs you honeslty think a waiter has to be more knowledge or have more skills than people in those professions?

I believe this is the way employment generally works.

I just hate when wait staff expect to be tipped for the shitty service they deliver. I hate having to pay 18% for a party of 5 even when I get shitty service. I also think it is unfair that high end restaurant waiters get a hell of a lot more at 15% than a cheap restaurant, I doubt they work harder. I feel for the lady that waits on people at Soup or Salad and gets $2 dollars for bringing drinks and cleaning up. I have witnessed her practically running to do a good job and I tip her more than 20%. I have a hard time giving less than 15% even at an expensive restaurant when I get shitty service, it makes me fell cheap even if they don't deserve it. I guess I should explain to the wait person that I am giving them a poor tip to reflect the poor service and shitty attitude they had. I would ask any waiters out there to think about it when they get stffed or why they got a bad tip, it just might be there own doing. eh.gif Should we really be tipping based on a percentage of the total bill? Shouldn't we get the same level of service no matter what the cost of the meal?

Have any moderate rabbis endorsed what you wrote? I need to know in order to determine a proper response.

Its all credit card transactions now, there is no way to hide. That notion died in the early 90's.
