people who bitch about tipping are scum? - Page 30

What I hate is when your server's co-worker brings you the food (and some times they may ask if you need anything else). You ask for a side of whatever, they say sure thing, they never come back, don't communicate it to your server and your server doesn't swing by for another 5 minutes assuming that you were taken care of when the food was brought out. I would say 9/10 times the co-worker simply doesn't care to follow up since they aren't getting any part of the tip. Retarded.

Those other jobs that pay poorly pay minimum wage. Servers get about 1/3 of that.

You seem like you are on the cutting edge of skills and moreso sophistication

For a typical meal where the service is what I expect (and I don't expect much except to be checked up on a few times and have my drink glass full), I'll calculate 10% of the subtotal and double it. I'll round down a buck or two if I had to wait longer than I cared for my diet coke refill or other issue. Round up a buck or two if the person was fairly pleasant and attentive. I can't say I've had a recent memory of receiving what I thought was shitty service.

I tip less if the waitress is hot. She is getting other benfits in life.

And if I eat with a group of people, and it's not for a close friend's birthday (where I'm willing to pay more to have a good time and companionship for people that matter), and they all want to split the bill where I end up paying for the drinks of some jackholes, I just announce I didn't drink so I will pay for what I ordered. I'll let the rest of them figure it out.

Non-consensual tipping, such as described in the OP, should be outlawed because it is extortion.

The pejorative thread title which calls people dirty names for objecting to being extorted is ridiculous. IMO the thread title alone qualifies this as a DT.

Waiters get paid 2.50 an hour before tax. Hence we have a tipping system here in the United States.

how does the establishment get away with paying so little depending on the tips... lets say one night all the non-tipping A holes turn up, then the servers have to find another way to pay the rent?? how can it be that no-one enforces a minimum wage that must be paid and tips for good service is a bonus. i don't get it!!!!! bored.gif

I don't understand why restaurants get away with paying less. From the government's perspective doesn't it make more sense to make them pay at least minimum wage and collect more income taxes from them? Less to hide.

There are numerous pretty bullshit jobs that get around the concept of minimum wage. Think about being a taxi driver where if you have a bad night you could lose money on your car/gas... despite having to work a non-standard schedule and potentially long shifts and deal with bullshit customers. I always sympathize with peeps who work jobs like that and try and tip well unless they are outright rude/dicks then sometimes I tip a bit less, but I still throw in a little bit because dude still got me to where I wanted to go and if he wasn't a taxi driver then it'd be that much harder to find a cab.

I don't know neither. It's been awhile since I worked the restaurant gig. But I had numerous slow nights before that I only walked away with 20 dollars after 6 hour shift.

Well, even with a minimum wage it's really not much money considering the work they do. Not just waiters, also hairdressers etc. They work like 40-50 hours per week and get 800€ per month for it. They depend on the tip. But seriously, 2.50$? That's sick. Maybe that's why you guys - at leas the brave, not narrow-minded ones - are tipping 15-20%. Here in Germany, 10% are considered normal to good.
Anyone knows where the tipping idea derivated from? Do you tip the cashier in the supermarket for being very friendly? Maybe it should encourage the waiters to endeavour. But then again, shouldn't everyone give "everything" in ones jobs? So everyone should be tipped. I guess that's what bonuses are for. But considering that bonuses are, as the name says, bonuses, which are beneficial but not needed to survive, tips seem to be. I personally do like the idea of tip but given that there are so many people not understanding the basics of the concept I'm not sure whether it's the ideal solution.

By the way, how are things handled in the US considering Mc Donalds? Here in Germany one isn't allowed to tip at Mc Donalds.

Who was that chef who didn't pay out the - or parts of the - tips to his employees again? Some guy owning like ten high end restaurants, pretty famous, he withheld 250k$ from his employees or so.

At McDonalds they are paid more, and no tipping. I don't know how the system evolved here, but it did. It actually works quite well, and wait staff is not badly paid all in. It does seem to me that many people here were likely raised by barbarians. I don't know their type in real life. For those of you in Europe who don't understand it, well that makes sense, but you should just realize that social norms are different everywhere, and that different approaches can work.
