I always tip 20%+ unless they include the gratuity, in which case, I figure that they have figured that they can live with their 18% across the board. I dislike the practice, but reading some of the comments here, I understand it. I've never worked in the food industry, but I have a lot of friends who have, and it seems like the biggest dickheads either tip low, or tip ostentatiously high. At least in the second case, you can pretend that the person isn't a dickhead for an hour or so.

FWIW, I've always gotten to know the cooks, waitstaff, and often the owner in any place I've frequented on a regular basis, and apparently, I'm fairly affable, because I would/I do get comped drinks, deserts, new appetizers, etc... on a fairly regular basis. It seems that tipping reasonably well and being polite actually do count for something.

I went to school in hotel/restaurant management and worked in service industry for a while so I'm pretty familiar with tipping.

First and only rule of tipping:
You don't have to tip, if you feel they don't deserve it.

I see people tipping shitty service all the time because they think it is standard. Don't bother, you're just giving servers an excuse to be lazy and letting new servers think they deserve tips no matter what they do.

I worked in a pretty Ritz-y place and some of our servers were so stupid about how tips worked, they'd complain about people asking for more bread or 'only' ordering cheap drinks and leaving bad tips (anything under 20% was a bad tip). I wish I could smack those people in the face and give them a dose of reality but that wasn't my place.

There are certain places in the world where tipping is not standard, cut some of these people a break...tipping is not a huge deal unless they've displayed an honest effort to exceed your expectations.

If you can't say that my statement is false, then you might as well quit bitching about it. Tipping is optional and a person shouldn't have to feel obligated to do it. If many of you are that broke, that you have to try to force people into giving you money that they're not required to give you, then you need to find a better paying job. If a person doesn't tip you, so the fuck what? Do your damn job and hope that the next person does. Until they say that tipping is mandatory, you all have not a leg to stand on in acting as if people HAVE to do it.

Thank you! Some of the servers have absolutely terrible attitudes and provide poor service, then have the nerve to bitch about not receiving a tip. I have no problem tipping a person who provides great service. But don't tell me I HAVE TO do it and don't tell me that a bad waiter/waitress deserves my optional money.

The only solutions to all this confusing tipping shit is to raise the minimum wage for all those in the services industries, allowing staff to be able to live off their base wage to some extent. The flow on effect will be that the prices of food etc be increase a bit for owners to adjust for increased wages, tips are purely discretionary, and for excellent service. People who used to tip are going to pay the same total amount anyway and the only customers that would whinge are the cheap skates who wouldn't pay tips in the first place but now have to fork out or stay the fuck home. The only restaurant owners who whinge will be the dodgy ones who take a cut of the tips from their staff, those owners should go to hell anyway.
