Just wanted to post yet another great St. Crispin's experience. I recently shipped back a pair of mine to get a resole, and an inquiry about if anything could be done to some damage due to extreme wear (severely beat up sole, and cracked lining and such).

@patrickBOOTH would you mind expanding on what the cracked lining is/was? Also where it occurred?

I'm curious about what happened but admittedly I am not (yet) as knowledge about the anatomy of these shoes.

Have you experienced the same kind of breakdown in other pairs, and do you attribute it just to your wear? For example, are you concerned it will happen to your other pairs with time?

If this is OT I'm happy to take this to a PM.

Thank you

It occurred along the outline of the shoes just above where the lining meets the insole on the inner and outer edges of the vamp area. So far it has happened to two of my pairs. Not sure why, I use trees, rotate my shoes, and I even condition the insides of my linings with Lexol. Perhaps I used too much and over softened leading to the breakage. Who knows, but my feet perspire quite a lot, so maybe that has to do with it. Perspiration is somewhat acidic and when it dries and ferments it turns alkaline, which is bad for leather reverting it back to rawhide and repelling any ionic fatliquors applied by the tannery (this is what happens when salt water touches shoes and you get warped leather and persistent salt stains in the winter). Perhaps some vinegar in there before conditioning to shift the protein fibers below their isoelectric point (around a pH of 6) would help, but who knows. Seeing how they address and can fix it, I'm not at all worried about it in the future. Phillip did say for future pairs he can use thicker lining in the vamp area. He said if the fit doesn't hurt me he can't see a reason for adjusting size as adding more room could cause unwanted creasing.

I'll also add that the replacement lining is noticeably thicker than on my other shoes.

Great choice!!! I'm saddened that you have a black sole as well. I thought I was special getting one. :(

Thanks, hehe the sole is a piece of art, will almost be a little hesitant to step outside.

Good choice MrChris! How is the fit?

Thanks Gustaf
Have only tried them on briefly, but they felt good.
