Okay ordering first pair of SCs.

Split-toe derbys or penny loafers?

The penny's are very nice. Go with 'em.

To be fair, both their split-toes and pennys are seriously good. I'm going to get both, it's just a matter of which I get first right...

Yes. Go with whatever sings to your heart.

with EG prices edging past the $1k mark, I'm looking to look at St Crispins.

Which retailers periodically offer sales on St Crispins?

I don't think you will see a lot of StC on sale, most retailers keep a pretty low stock as there's no MTO fee. We occasionally have a pair in our odd stock section, but it's usually one pair in a single size.

SC retailers routinely close down.

This seller has a small but nice selection. They occasionally have "flash sales" I scored a pair for under $1000.

While not a traditional sale, the current USD-CAD exchange rate sure makes buying from Leatherfoot feel like getting things at a discount... They also periodically run sales, although like most retailers, "sale season" (the holidays) just ended.

^^^

Exchange rate is really really good for buying shoes in Canada or Japan.  Strong dollar FTW.
