Persol 649 fit check

Hi.

I've been wanting the Persol 649 frames for some time and finally got around to trying them out. There seems to be a general consensus that the size 54 frames are too large for many on SF and it's often noted that 52 is a good baseline.

Mostly, I've only been able to find 54s in NYC. I have a fairly large head and a not-thin face. The 54s look to me like they might be the better of the fit, below is an example. Do these look too big to you or do i stand a chance of rocking the Marcello Mastroianni vibe (once properly attired.)

Thoughts?

+1. The "sagging" shape of the frame seems to exaggerate the fullness of your face, especially in the larger frames. If you are indeed love with that style, I would suggest you look into the 714s. I just grabbed a pair myself. They are less exaggerated than the 649s and are easier to pull off IMHO.

Though if you do stick with them, definitely go with the 52s.

Excellent feedback.

I was afraid that the sagging shape made me more jowel-ly.

[edit: i'd looked at and enjoyed the 714s but dismissed them because of the folding which i would never use. the shape is different enough that i'll go back and review. nice tip.]

If you wanted a similar alternative, the 2869 are similarly shaped, yet don't have the sagging frame.

I finally found a place that had several styles to choose from and came to the realization that none of their larger, classic shapes fit my face at all- my face is narrower than yours and I looked awful. Some of the smaller, squarer frames looked better but the ones I want weren't readily available in my frame size or polarized... need to check online again.

Check eBay. I got my polarized 714s NIB from a more-than-reputable seller for $150 less than I have seen in any store (online and off). They aren't even an older styles/a discontinued lens color!

Where did you try them on CG? I'm I treated in some Persols but like the OP not ready to pull the trigger as they are NOT a versatile shape that will suit most/all faces.

I applaud the OP for his caution and soliciting advice. Too many people think they can grab an iconic item for instant cool when they in fact look like a clown. 649s to mee seem way too big and broad and would be much more versatile with a slightly less sagging browline in a smaller size. I'm looking to try more on before snooping for a good deal on eBay.

Not sure where you are located, but you can try these out:

I used the international locator to find a store to try my pair on in Barcelona. IME all the stores listed have at least a satisfactory amount in stock, though you can always find locations by you and then call to see if they have the collection you are looking for.

As another idea, if you like Persol but want something that might flatter your face a little better, take a look at the 2958. They are plastic aviators that are very cool

2958 aren't for me. The 2869s are well worth a look. I'm also going to reattempt 714s.

My Marcello crush is going to have to stay one-dimensional. It seems I lack the chiseled jaw and square face to pull off the 649s.

Fwiw, it's fairly easy to find the larger size 649s at many Sunglass Huts and Solstice stores.

Q. The black Persol frames look like they are offered in either gray or green lenses. What's the appeal/advantage of green?

For what its worth, I just got 949s from UnitedShades online. I tried the 56s and they were too large (even for my huge face) and the exchange for the 54s went without a hitch. Excellent communications, fast delivery. (Of course I have no economic connection to the company--just a happy customer).

My 714s have green lenses, but only because I only like tortoise shell frames and the gray or brown lenses looked a little too monochrome IMHO. And the blues were just ridiculous. Black frames with green lenses sound kinda cool though, actually. I'd have to see them in person to get a feel of what they are all about.

Got a pair 714s at NM Last Call for $89. Oddly, during that shopping trip, I lost a pair of old Persols I had (in Neiman's no less), so I think the 714s were fate. Brown frames/black lenses, and I love them to pieces.

I assume you went to Discover Mills? I need to hit that NMLC more frequently as I always make out well. Just a shame you have to drive up to BFE for deals.

Secondly, you are a bastard as I thought mine for $200 were an excellent deal. biggrin.gif I assume they aren't polarized though?
