i think it has to do with your body shape, neck, height, shoulder width.

Sometimes go for skinny lapel or wide lapel is for one specific look. Say, a double breasted jacket with skinny notch lapel would look bad no most of people.

Skinny people are for the young guys who don't recognize the awesomeness of a lapel "belly" in a suit.

Wide peaks, skinny notches. I would actually consider wearing wide peaks, would never go below a 2.75 or above a 3 in notch lapels (which may seem skinny, but it's proportionally ideal for me). However, if I had to pick a side to screw up on, wide notch lapels are a bit too Harry Callahan for me. I'd go skinny notches.

Just out of curiosity, one measures the width of the lapel at the widest point with the tape perpendicular to the fold (crease, roll) of the lapel,   correct?

I went with "wide", but like many others, I would have voted "skinny" a couple of years ago. It remains to be seen whether I stick with big-ish lapels next time the skinnies are in.

I have to vote skinny because I'm small and skinny :(

I still prefer the wide look....if only I was bigger frown.gif

Wide - I'm a stocky guy and also middle aged. I think the thin lapels look great on slim guys and young guys and a little silly on my demographic. I have had all my suits made with 4" lapels.

I like 2 or 2.5 inches. You decide whether that's "skinny" or not.

Just went with 3.75 on my new coat orders. Can't say I'm sorry. A Big F-U to all the skinny lapels ; - )

What is 3"? Is that standard nowadays or is that even considered wide given how far the trend went to extremely skinny (e.g., 2") lapels?

I'd say 3-3.5" is the sweet spot for suits.

I experienced a mini- existential crisis last summer in deciding whether to buy
a fully canvassed sport coat that fit perfectly, was my basic style, and was
deeply discounted, because it had 3" lapels. All my other jackets/suits have 3 1/2"
or even a tad wider. I bought the jacket and wear it. I still think it would be perfect
if the lapels were wider.

On a thin guy (34-40) I'd say it's proportionally right in the middle. I would never recommend going below 2.75" (what I wear) or above 3" (Also what I wear biggrin.gif) for those sizes.

+2 FTW!

Depends, if the guy is short or stalky I'd go wide lapel, if the guy is tall and lanky I'd go thin lapel.
