Lucky for you, Gerry, I have another thread that might help you out with the Herring question.

I have the Ramsey. Love them. Would highly endorse.

Thanks Bourbonblasted!

Sorry to hijack the thread. Right now it's a toss up between the following:

Suede dub munx:

Herring Shakespeare II or C&J Lowndes

Brown calf:

AS Ramsey or Carmina on the Simpson last

I can try the C&J and Carmina shoes in person but not the others so I'm leaning towards them.

No hijacking at all. No worries.

I have tried on the Ramsey and the Lowndes and can say I prefer the 99 last of the Ramsey to the 348 any day of the week. The Lowndes made my feet look like bananas and did not look good at all with slacks/suit pants. The 99 is far more versatile and while it is sleek it is not unapproachable.

I've tried on a couple Carminas in Barca but never the Simpson last. From what Spoo says and from what I have read elsewhere it is probably comparable to the AS 99. Sleek with a chiseled tow but also in a more conservative last.

If you're looking for sleek and contemporary then I say the Lowndes is hard to beat. If more traditional, then it's a toss up between AS and Carmina, though I prefer the AS (obvious bias).

Also, if you are looking for an even more conservative last check out Sid's monks. All his shoes are E lasts by default so they have a far more American/substantial look to them. More like a brogue.
