Are studs necessary to complete a tuxedo?

Hey guys,

I'm going to a formal event on Friday. I have a really nice tailored tux along with a vest and all that good stuff. However I left my studs at my parents' house and I do not have them here in NY. I do not really want to buy another pair for my shirt. So I was wondering, is it totally fine to wear cufflinks without studs when sporting a tux? You know, just button the regular buttons instead? If so, what is the different message I am sending? Is one look less formal or less traditional? Thanks.

Since you're in NYC, go to Tender Buttons and switch out your buttons for something more interesting. They offer a myriad of stud-like possibilities. It'll cost around $15.

Thanks Tomasso - I'll check the place out. But my situation is tricky in that I am currently on Boston in business and won't be getting to NY until a few hours before the event.

To add to the original question -

1) Do studs have to match cufflinks exactly, or just make sure silver goes with silver and gold with gold?

2) I was actually thinking of picking up another pair of cufflinks since the one I was planning to wear are boring. However, there only a few stores near my office right now that I could make a purchase at. Which of these would you recommend as the best value (not meaning the cheapest):

  1. Thomas Pink
  2. Brooks Brothers
  3. Banana
  4. Jos A Bank (yeah right)

Thanks again.

Brooks will be better value, IMO, than Pink. Neither will be cheap. I've never noticed what BR had in this department. SYMS in New York usually has serviceable links-and-studs sets in the $20 range--Bill Blass models and the like, but perfectly respectable and good value. The Brooks set will probably set you back $220, by contrast. They do have, however, pretty nice links and studs. Charles Tyrwhitt has what look to my eyes to be a good set as well 9with proper chain-linked cuff links), but they're not on your list.

I would say matching silver/silver and gold/gold is the primary concern, but I would be happy to wear studs that didn't match a favorite (or especially meaningful) pair of cufflinks.

For this situation, how about you keep the reg buttons and guy a pair of faux MOP links. They will appear to match and you won't be out much. And from now on you'll keep an extra set of studs & links on your person at all times!

It might cheaper and easier to just have your parents ship the studs to you via 2nd day air.

So is the consensus here that I will look like a fool without studs? Because I was going to buy another pair of cufflinks anyway.

Okay well how do you feel about wearing these crappy studs:

With nice silver knot cufflinks? Because its the only combo I can do right now. I really hate the matching cufflinks pictured above. Don't want to wear them despite the fact that they would match. So are the knots and those studs incompatible? Should I just wear the cufflinks? Or should I be boring and wear the set? I am wearing a vest with this so only a few buttons will be showing.

I think that's fine, wear those studs with the silver cufflinks and worry about more important things. It will look fine.

Studs are essential IMHO, and those will happily suffice.
