Not to say that this is your situation though, the lag is quite real (allthough im on a 3 to 4 year old macbook, and its not that bad for me) and it probably should be fixed. But besides the performance issues, its just a manner of getting used to the new controls imho.

BTW I'm using a 3 year old Macbook Pro as well. SF's new controls I can deal with, but what I can't get used to, is the way that the fans in my laptop now run at maximum speed when just browsing the new SF2.0, same with other Huddler forums. 60-70% CPU utilisation on a 2.5GHz Core 2 Duo with Google Chrome and SF2.0, similar with Safari. One can forget good battery life now. Pages now take 20-40 seconds to load, sometimes up to a minute before pictures and avatars appear. Before it was only 10-15 seconds. All the excessive scrolling I have to do now, because of the white space, just to read threads and posts, same with other Huddler forums SF2.0 is just plain inefficient, fullstop.

SF2.0 is practically unusable on my Fujitsu UMPC/netbook and Galaxy S Android phone. This seriously limits my access.

Basically, SF is NO longer the enjoyable experience it once was for me.

The thread's title "What Have You Done To My Beloved Forum?!"... says it all really.

Bye Bye. [/END]

My macbook is 2.1ghz dual core and only has 1gb of ram, but im not experiencing the issues you are having..Is your version of chrome up to snuff? A couple of versions ago chrome experienced a mem leak and it would show the symptoms you experience. Im running snow leopard btw.

As for mobiles, i can see where you're coming from, sf cant be browsed on my blackberry anymore, I just get a mem shortage and thats it.

The system is supposed to be Tapatalk friendly.

A fully mobile system is actually being built, but unfortunately, I don't have a firm date on that.

I am looking closely at both google analytics and at other, more quality focused measures. I've been on this site for nearly 10 years. We are not just going to sit back and say "la-di-da". We are actually doing a lot of things behind the scenes to make the user experience better.

SF has a pretty high rank from the Philippines and Bangladesh too.eh.gif
I guess you can't trust Alexa stats.

I think it has gotten a bit better. Browsing the B&S is a bit odd these days. I don't know what it is but there doesn't seem to be as much stuff that I want to buy as least not in easy reach. The photo loading times on my imac are pretty nasty. I did manage to sell some cheap shoes the other day and I think the system at present basically pushes you to sell at low prices or not at all.

Overall, the site looks better and there's certainly less spam - goodness I did my best to send in spam reports. But it somehow seems unwieldy and less conducive to a good wander and read of various/ random threads. I hope it gets better.

Let me reframe my statement....as a landing page to the forum, the recent activity page is a horrible entryway. The forums page would be SO much better.

I came here to post exactly this. Use Forums as a landing page instead of the frontpage and the experience is improved. You still can't see any forums from where you land (only featured editorials, fuuu) but in terms of navigation it's a step in the right direction.

Also, on the SW&D/MC home pages you should eliminate the "blue box" with free booze notice and sticky threads (retain the stickies if they can be incorporated as a header to the regular threads). Or at the very least create a sticky thread called "FREE BOOZE OPPORTUNITIES" to house this information and eliminate four lines of text on an already cluttered page.

This is my view on a 13" MacBook Pro after clicking on the Forums link... I'm in Forums trying to see the forums but I still have to scroll down to see the first forum, wut?

I am on a 14" by 8" monitor and have the same issue...

Here is what it looks like when I click on CE...

On the old system I would get several threads just clicking on a forum.

So much wasted space now and it makes viewing a pain in the ass... ffffuuuu.gif

That's something I pointed out earlier - the redundancy of the navigation links.  I believe I counted 11 ways to get back to the main page from any given page.

To my eye one of the biggest issues is the weakening of the SF brand.  The old forum landing page with its logo and red lines was a distinct image and recognizable from across the room as SF.  The new home page is recognizable only as huddler's brand.  Identical - more or less - to all the other forums huddler runs.  It is poorly designed from a creative perspective and seemingly without any consideration of user wants and needs, and experience.  I find myself using my mouse to go around thread titles in the subforums as the info pop ups are both useless and visually jarring.  I'm sure it is attractive to advertisers though.  As the above image shows, who wouldn't want their logo larger than the logo of the forum you're advertising on?  The sidebar is equally disproportionate to the core purpose of the forum - community and conversation.  25% of your real estate given over to advertisers is a huge concession.

I like your advertisers and purchase from them but am running adblocker and no scripts simply to make my user experience more palatable.

Please do use adblocker and no-scripts (I expect that you are an expert user), if that makes your user experience better. Our main concern is that you enjoy the community, not that you see the ads. Really.

The redundancy is deliberately built in, to allow new users to easily access different pages (especially having navigation at both the top and botton of the page.) As mentioned in another thread, I'm talking directly with the CTO about reducing whitespace and speed issues, but I'll talk to the creative team about the other issues.

Cheers,

Fok.

About the ad space, is it possible to make one column of ads along the edge instead of a double column that only dips halfway down the page? It means that you would have to do away with the double size ads but  if it enhances the viewer experience wouldn't it be in SF's best interest. Alot of complaints were about the shape/size of the posts.

It may make the page look more continuous as the post would all be of equivalent size...

I understand this concern, and I am an advocate for a minimum thread width to be set, and have dynamic side units. It will take time, and we'll see. It;s not a very satisfying answer, I know.

Hi all,

Thanks for being here. We have been reading every single complaint, and we are doing everything within our power to respond to the valid complaints about the system.

The first problem we tackled was the excessive white space in the forum. In direct consultation with our partner's CTO, we have made changes to decrease this drastically, and I think that you will all agree that it is a significant improvement.

The changes are live, but it may take a 10-20 minutes for all the caches to clear. The highlight changes are:

1) Avatar size was decreased from 120px to 80px, greatly decreasing the vertical spacing taken up by avatars.

2) Because the avatars are smaller, we were able to considerably narrow the postbit.

3) We have taken on empty space above quotes and at the top of post bodies

Thanks guys. We are listening.

The next 2 items on our list are to decrease load speeds and to make changes to make the new Buying&Selling system more dynamic and interesting to browse.

Thanks for all of your input.

Cheers,

Fok.
