Leather Jacket for a teenager?

I just turned 23 and was wondering if I'm too young to wear a leather jacket? I've seen my dad wear one for decades and according to him one should only buy one when they are in their 30s. I've always been a fan of calfskin and recently been addicted to spending on cordovan as well. What should I look for when buying a leather jacket, and are there any particular brands I should keep in mind? I tend to like classic styling and I plan to keep it for a very long time! smile.gif

You're not a teenager if you're 23.

know why teenagers are called teenagers? sevenTEEN, eightTEEN, nineTEEN, etc. But back to question, you can definitely wear leather jackets at that age, i've even known some high schoolers who pulled off leather jackets quite well.

Look in WAYWT. Most posters there are (or at least look like they are) in their 20s-ish. So long as you won't feel all uncomfortable and self-conscious, they aren't all that hard to pull off, just don't get some giant, boxy vintage thing

What should I look for when buying one? I really like Burberry london jacket, but that is upwards of 1k? Do I really have to spend 1K for a good quality leather jacket?

Depends on what style you want. Look at forum affiliate Temple of Jawnz (aka ToJ), which has really affordable and high quality pieces. Ebay and B&S are also good places to look.

As for Burberry London, I've seen some decent stuff from their Made in USA subline, and Prorsum certainly makes top-shelf jackets, but a lot of their Made in China leathers are really thin (very soft, but questionable lasting quality). If you have access to a Nordstrom Rack, I've seen some John Varvatos leathers go for $3-400, not the greatest quality stuff and very hit or miss, but there are occasionally some great finds

you should probably attempt to get over your identity crises before you buy a leather jacket..

By teenager I meant not 30+, sorry for the confusion. Now write something that the previous poster hasn't written otherwise, bye bye brotha!

If you have to ask the question, don't buy it.

Im younger than you and I know what you mean about the leather. I postponed getting a leather for quite a while because I wasnt sure if I could pull one off and even when I first got my jacket (ToJ Bomber) I was a bit self conscious or maybe the word I am looking for is that I was 'intimidated' because not many people around the area wear real leathers (ones I usually see are those plasticy looking jackets with hoods)

After a while it just ended up looking normal on me that I dont really have a problem with leather anymore. I think its all in your head, once you get used to the idea of wearing leather then you will be fine. Just keep the fit nice and slim.

Also if people dont generally see you in leather then you should expect some fonzy comments your way.

I don't get these discussions. Since when is wearing leather even unusual?

It's not unusual to wear one, it's just in your head.

Make sure it's not a "dad leather jacket" fit.

Actually, just have TOJ make you one.
