FEEDBACK THREAD about the '-NEW-' look of Styleforum - Page 3

The Previous Thread and Next Thread links only seem to show up when logged in. Maybe that's a strategic decision. Nevertheless, it means choosing between slower browsing or the nuisance of logging in.

It's an integral part of the platform, and our contract states that it will be there. So, it's sort of a non-starter. There are things we can take out of the column, but we can't actually remove it altogether.

I go to styleforum.net on my laptop and the front page is literally nothing but ads. Not literally as in "figuratively," but really--nothing but ads. It sucks.

The position of the red "Report this Post" flag is distracting. Is this even used much? I suggest moving it right with the group of other icons, next to the thumbs up. The fact that it is red will be a sufficient differentiator. I don't like scrolling through posts and keep seeing the red flag button off by itself.

I want to throw in my $.02 about the ads on the right hand side. I know there's no love lost for them around here, but they don't bother me in the least. I totally ignore them.

I have been browsing the forum mostly on a monster monitor, however, so on a smaller notebook I can see why others might dislike them.

But hey - there's no such thing as a free lunch, right?

- Performance is worse then before though I am cool to wait it out and see if it improves like others say it should.

- The stickies do not let you go to page number or specifically the last page (see the SW&D forum). Not the end of the world but it means a few extra clicks for really no reason.

- Biggest issue is the right hand column. Really seems like such a weird design choice considering the number of people who use mobile devices and tablets\net books with smaller real estate with I am sure this number only going to dramatically increase in the coming months/years. Really do not get this at all and it is my #1 complaint. Just a very strange and I think not very well thought out move.

- Navigation is awkward overall. The old site was so clean and uncluttered and now it is just so distracting, cluttered and busy. I hope this is just the case of it being cool to have the new site and trying to cram it full and then streamline it after vs. this is the way it is going to be so deal (like the right hand column issue).

- It would be nice to have a theme\skin that removes alot of the junk listed above so people have the choice though I am sure this is easier said then done.

+1 to both of these.

I understand that the right-hand column is not going to go away, but it is irritating and really disturbs the layout of the page. It seems counter-intuitive although I suppose that it is more visible - as in, more intrusive - than having the ads at the top of the page, but that doesn't mean that people are going to like it - quite the opposite, in fact.

Colours are a bit too bright for me. I liked the more blue layout.

1) Not-going-away or not, the right-hand ad column is obtrusive. It does not make me look at the ads any more than the top orientation did, but it does significantly degrade the experience.

2) Can New Posts be put back in the nav bar at the top of the page? Too many clicks to get to it now.

3) +1 on the earlier comment about navigation within B&S. If I sort by, say, footwear, then click through to look at a pair of shoes, when I go back, I've lost my sort. This sort of navigation flaw is really discouraging.

4) Thanks for upping the text size. There also seems to be less white space than immediately post-rollout. That's an improvement, too.

5) +1 for anchoring sigs at the bottom of posts. This would greatly improve clarity, particularly for short posts.

6) The format of individual B&S listings and the ability to see an image and price in the list view are both great improvements. Thanks.

7) The inclusion of PM text in e-mail notifications is also an improvement. Thanks.

Can you at least give the option to use the old layout?

just hoping this speeds up soon

The ads don't really mess with me at all. I have an older macbook, have my windows only 4/5 maxed out at any given time instead of full screen, and my browsing isn't hampered. I will note that it took me swapping to a fully updated firefox and flash to get the site to load properly.

My only major request would be the option for a slightly darker skin. The forum is BRIGHT at the moment.

Then it is a significant error in accepting it and one which might have been better tested first.

I think I see the look of the site evolving in real time...

This. I find it very hard to believe that the majority of those invited to test the system before going live were perfectly ok with the layout, unless they are biased and have close relationships with Fok and co. and scared to tell it like it is.

Even if the majority was cool with it, I cannot believe that there was a decision to go live with what we have right now. Exluding the whole right hand margin/ugly front page controversies, there are so many bugs and performance issues, that if this was implemented by a real business, someone would be in trouble. I can even potentially excuse the fact that if this was something put in place by people who do not do this for a living, but to pay for this redesign, implementation and support (which is a big assumption on my part) is mind boggling.
