Performance Issues  

Well, I guess I won't be browsing SF much from work, where we're still on IE7.

There is something really wrong here. Before the change I had no problem with the sites speed, now is just crawls for me. I have cable with the optional higher speed, but no good, sooooooo sloooooooow. It would be a great benefit to fix up what the problem is, as it also appears , from looking at the postings for today, a lot of people are slacking off on useage. If you're using some new wiz- bang tech. like you mention above, maybe it's not the best idea for common use. This was a good site, it's a hassel now.

The speed is ok on my desktop but noticeably slower on my iPad.

I'm looking at my Windows Task Manager right now and as soon as I tried to load up SF on IE7, my CPU jumped to 22% usage. When I tried to create my first FS thread, I had to quit IE altogether because my CPU was up to 67% usage!

I'm not sure if there is a fix for this, but as it stands, the forum is of no use to me at all.

Guys - one way to speed up performance is to use the firefox add-on NoScript. It blocks scripts by default and you can "whitelist" trusted websites that you want running scripts.

Install it and then only add styleforum.net to your trusted list. keep viglink.com, facebook.net, quantserve.com, and googleadservices.com blocked. this will disable all the advertisements and provide for a much faster browsing experience.

it's a very useful add-on to have generally, really speeds up browsing on bullshit web 2.0 sites like this one and other Huddler websites

Hmmm... Well, it would be nice if you kept our viglinks on, since it helps us, but otherwise, yeah, I don't really care. Real talk = core users are key to a forum's success as a community. Casual users are key to a forum's financial success. Really. If it keeps you guys hanging out at our bar, by all means.

Nothing scientific here, but I know my 2008 15inch Macbook Pro is certainly working much harder to render the new SF now. I know it's working harder because the fans are running at maximum speed when showing the new SF pages. This is with both Chrome and Safari. This did not happen before with the old SF. This most likely is going to kill laptop battery life as well. On my Windows 7 UMPC SF seems rather slow to navigate, it was perfectly OK with the old SF, again the fan is running faster just like with my Macbook. On hot days it might be a bad idea to view the new SF, in case my laptops overheat.

Page loading times seem to be much longer now, probably twice as long. I have a 2MB DSL connection here in China, but sometimes speeds out and in of China can be rather slow.

Maybe if I had gigabit internet, was in the USA, and had an 8core monster desktop rig, I wouldn't have noticed any difference?

Oh yeh, still no adverts with the new SF. Was seeing the adverts OK before.

So do you recommend a solution for IE? Or is every SF member going to have to run Firefox to view SF?

Can you explain what viglinks does and how it helps the forum? I would like to help the forum to the extent possible, but it doesn't help anyone if people like me tune out altogether because of the sensory overload caused by the ads/sidebar

Irritatingly slow on an ipad.

Vigilinks takes user-generated links, and if you click through them, makes them affiliate links. If you make a purchase through that click (they must use a cookie system,) we get credit. They take a cut, of course, but it helps our revenue stream, and costs you nothing more than what you were going to spend on that new Patek watch or Attolini suit anyway. And it has nothing to do with the sidebar, new system, etc... We have had it or a similar system running for a while, same with Ebay affiliate links, etc... It helps us without being at all intrusive to the forum experience.

This is so often the problem with so called web 2.0, unless one has a supercomputer.

Yep, it's annoying. Is there a way to speed it up on an iPad?

Loading all "sponsors" each time when loading a single page is very irritating and this is the cause of she slowing process.
