Syphillis is treatable if it's diagnosed. In medicine it's one of those things that nobody thinks about but can cause really vague, frustrating symptoms. It's not entirely uncommon for folks to come in with undiagnosed tertiary syphillis -- at that point they've already have damage to their nervous system with permanent deficits.
One of my attendings told me a story of a WWII vet he saw in his clinic back in the early 90s. The guy had developed severe vision problems as well as a myriad of gait and other movement disorders. One of the residents asked him about any history of STDs and the guy mentioned he "had syphillis but it was treated with some pills." The resident asked when this happened and the guy said he got it in Europe during WWII. Well, penicillin wasn't marketed until 1945. This guy had untreated syphillis for over 50 years!
