By length, i should be a 10 (maybe even a 9.5), but I got pretty wide feet. Sometimes, I'm lucky enough to find wide shoes, but usually, I just make do with 10.5s and 11s.
The problem, of course, is that while the feet are very wide up front, they're normal-sized near the heels, so I'm always slipping out of my shoes. And this has been going on for so long that it's actually become "comfortable" for me. Also doesn't help that I got flat feet and usually need insoles.

With the summer and all, though, I'm wearing loafers all the time. It seems, though, that these particular shoes run slightly larger/wider than usual. And no laces, obviously, and no socks to provide friction. Amazing arch support also means that I don't need my insoles. So the shoes actually feel more like mules or something. Which is fine, I feel comfortable, but the largeness of the shoes are more pronounced, you know? It definitely "feels" too big, which isn't the case with sneakers, oxfords of the same size.

So just came to my attention that I definitely size up for comfort. Wondering if anyone else does too.

good lord, this post reads like a horror novel. kvx, do your shoes wear wear down pretty fast? I ask because ill-fitted shoes will deteriorate faster. what shoe brands are you wearing?

For most people shoes that are too large will be far from comfortable.

Haven't noticed any fast weardown--but then again, I've never had anyone's feet but my own, and I don't really pay attention to the lifespan of friends' shoes. Because of flat feet though, I do have some issues with pronation (over?under? not sure), so the outside heel wears out first.

I don't think I've ever really had any brand loyalty. The oxfords getting most heavy play right now are a couple pairs of Cole Haans. The loafers I mentioned in the OP were Timberland Boot Co. A pair of Nikes and a pair of Pumas, although a pair of Adidas recently met its demise.

Probably. But I'd rather be sliding around and slipping out instead of having shoes that are too narrow, both in width and height.
Cursed feet, I have.
I guess I've never known what it's like to have shoes that really fit.
The only solution is to make enough money to get quality bespoke shoes?

This tale is worthy of a troll - it certainly amounts to a travesty.

Forget about strange reasoning, go to a decent shop and get fitted properly for shoes and then wear some that actually fit.

All this other nonsense should go in the trash with your current shoes.

I used to have the same problem... the shoes that fit me best are an 8.5G/9.0F UK (and keep to wider lasts like EG's 202). However, back in my pre-SF days I frequently found myself with size 9.5 or 10.0 shoes b/c they were only available in normal widths. Now I know better, although I do have a pair of Alden Cordovan Chukka's which are a bit too big/long which I wear b/c I like the look of them.

I had a couple pairs of shoes that caused my heel to slip a bit when I walked. I have found that tongue pads helped reduce/eliminate the slipping in the heel. Thicker socks also help.

I use to have to get size 12 shoes when i'm really a 10.5 because of my wide feet. In 2 wears i would completely destroy the vamp with bruising and creases. I know what it's probably also due to the cheap leather, but i also noticed that effect when i was trying on nicer shoes in big sizes.

Get shoes that fit, go to a wide size, your foot should bend naturally, no reason to get anything that does not fit like a glove. Take it from someone that has spent enough money learning that lesson.

Buy a brand that makes widths and don't settle for non-properly sized shoes. It's what I've done and it has made all the difference.

To OP, first thing you should do if you have flat feet is go get some proper orthotics and I mean custom ones. Once you get a set, it will not only change your position in the shoe but the shoes will feel smaller. If you get decent carbon ones (around $300+) they will have the least impact. They will also change the way you stand, walk, etc. There is no point in buying more shoes until you do this because the sizing won't be right.
