Have you ever taken a real risk voluntarily?

Have you ever taken a major risk in your career 100% voluntarily?

I'm specifically wondering if anyone has left an objectively great situation for something that, while it may have had great upside, didn't make any sense strictly on the probability weighted outcome. But anything that was voluntarily really ballsy that you might have done within your own company would be just as applicable.

To clarify, I mean this in the sense of taking personal / career risk to do something that you believed in or really wanted, not taking inappropriate risks with other people's (i.e. your company's investors) capital.

Absolutely. At least twice. Those who do not end up being Johnson in Accounts Payable.

Yes.

I left a stable job with excellent prospects for advancement to go to a risky biotech/pharma start up.

Definitely. Both for love and business

I left my original firm after 10 years, with no specific prospect of returning or of getting a job anywhere else in particular, to hike the Appalachian Trail. I don't really think of it as a risk because I was burned out; it was really more of a midlife crisis kind of thing. But it was definitely worthwhile from a personal standpoint.

I do nothing else. The end result is very satisfactory, but the road to it has known a lot of up and downs, with the downs being very deep. I figure it comes down to ones character if you take those risks, i've taken more then my share..
