ID Sea Turtle leather shoes

I few months ago I stumbled upon some old Footjoy oxford shoes (not golf shoes) that were black suede and what I assumed was alligator or fake alligator skin. I was going to sell them on ebay but was concerned as I had no real clue if the leather was actually alligator. So I took them to my local cobbler and he told me they were sea turtle. He sounded confident but I figured it would not hurt to see if anyone on the board could confirm or contest this via photos as I still have my doubts.

The shoe also have say "USA PAT. 1977" and "Rex" on the insoles that you cannot see in the photos.

those are croc (if real leather, based on the vintage, I am assuming they are). not gator. certainly not sea turtle.

Thanks everyone. Crocodile it is.



Even if they did fit me, the style is not for me so I am going to try to sell them and use the proceeds towards something a bit more my speed. I will put them on ebay and the B&S forum soon. I really have no idea what to even ask for them so I have to figure that first.

They are 10 B, btw.

I believe the quick and dirty way to ID turtle is by the number of sides to the scales - 5. lefty

Great shoes. Actually they're Alligator, I believe. Vintage Foot Joy used fantastic skins. As for the big boys (croc & gator) I've seen, all have been domestic American Alligator (as are these). In the old day, most US exotic footwear makers bought their skins domestically. Even better than croc, I think. Good luck selling, friend.
