Hi,

I want to buy my boyfriend some dress shoes and have been reading through these threads that the Park Avenue are a good shoe.

But I need some advice on colour!

He will need them first for a day wedding where he is wearing a light grey suit, but he also often wears a dark charcoal suit.

My first thought was just black, but then reading here I thought maybe dark brown or merlot.

Thanks for your help!

Black is classic, but based on his suits he'll make better use of dark brown. Make sure they size his feet right, most important part.

Black would be best for a wedding, and everyone needs one pair of black shoes like the Park Ave so they will certainly get future use. Brown would probably be more versatile for the future, but may not be appropriate for the wedding.

Are you in the UK? If so, AE might not give you the most bang for the buck.

Black, absolutely, without a doubt.
The sizing on that shoe is a little odd, you should take him and have him try them on.

black is yawn inducing.

if he's got style and this isn't his only pair of nice shoes, walnut all the way.

Black will probably fit better for the wedding. Since he'd probably need them in the future, I'd say black park avenue. The brown will probably go better with a more elaborate shoe.

+1 on the black comment. I have the PA's in merlot and have had no issues wearing them at weddings; and I'm a pretty self-conscious individual, relatively speaking.

I have those in black and brown, and I like a brown a LOT better. Get the brown. It may be less appropriate for the wedding, but will be better over all.

I have them in black and brown and even though I love brown shoes in general I am not very excited by the specific brown of the PA. In case of the PA I'd go with black. If you wanna get him something in brown at the same quality/fit/price as the PA I'd look into Allen Edmonds Fifth Avenue shoes or Allen Edmonds Strand shoes.

Merlot all the way. You can wear those with every colour suit. Some conservative folks may not be comfortable with brown or walnut with a gray suit and you want to make sure he's happy and comfortable wearing them. Excellent gift by the way!

Ah ha ha! Now I am even more confused!

He's definately not conservative in style, and I don't think the wedding will be too formal.

If I don't go with black, what do you think of the Van Ness in Burgundy? It's on sale...

I'm in Australia but going to be in the States for two weeks so can make exchanges etc then...

Forums are great right? No real consensus, but just the fact that no one has objected to your shoe selection is a good sign. I'm sure whatever AE you decide on will be a good choice, the Van Ness model looks nice too by the way. Never hurts to find a better deal. Don't forget to have him sized properly.

The Van Ness would be nice, IMO.
