Teacher pay is
very closely correlated with a region's cost-of-living. Teacher pay is higher in pricier Zip Codes because local taxpayers can afford it and because pay HAS to be higher in order for teachers to be able to afford to live near, if not actually in, the neighborhoods in which they work.
It turns out, therefore, that a teacher's buying power is about the same no matter where he or she lives in the USA.
I'm able to live and teach in a district with a very high cost-of-living, but that's mostly because Mrs. Thread and I are child-free DINKs. My colleagues with children to raise commute in from the hinterlands where rents are cheaper.
