while i agree, and my roll is pretty basic, i dont think it should be sloppy either. i think that is often worse than contrived.

I tend to do the "master" roll. You can make it as nonchalant looking as you want, like (for eg.) letting the corner of the cuff stick out a bit further rather than having it perfectly aligned with the rolled-up portion. And I prefer it because the basic roll tends to get too tight around my arms.
For me the master roll is easier and can be done pretty easily while you have the shirt on. I find it tough to do the normal roll with shirt on, which I think it why someone suggested doing it with the shirt off.
