Shipping a desktop computer

What's the best way to do this? I'm moving and the desktop has to come with me. I'm flying, so the car is not an option. Should I pay a PC store to disassemble it and pack it? Is it better to mail it via postal service or check it on the plane? Can I do it myself with a suitcase and foam padding? I'm worried about static and obviously mishandling.

Bubble wrap + tape + brown box + UPS or FedEx + insurance (if you want) = Computer shipped

that'd be very expensive, given the weight and dimensions of a desktop computer.

Is it really that simple? I have around $4,000 in software/hardware wrapped up in this thing. I have tremendous respect for bubble wrap, but this is a bit more precious than your Milf Hunter archive.

I was just about to suggest this. Computers and software can be replaced. Valuable documents, photos, videos etc. are irreplaceable. Suggest that the OP backup his stuff online(in the cloud as they say) and/or store it on an external HDD and take it on the flight with him as carry-on.

Everything is backed up on external hard drives and online backup servers.

I've got a flight to San Francisco on August 11th and a flight to New York on August 12th. I'll be on one of them.

i would take the harddrives out separately and ship them. everything else is gravy...

+1 to the packing the hard drives separately. I'd also pack the backup harddrive separate of the internal hard drives. Also, I'd use packing peanuts to line the box. Heavily.

If you have a heavy heatsink, remove it. If you have a gfx card, remove it. Harddrives, up to you. Cant hurt to wrap them separately. This method is proven. And get insurance.

I think you'll like it in SF. The architecture there seems really up your alley
