Why no love for the three piece suit?

Hello everybody,

I also started to actually have a meaningful wardrobe at the age of 42. Before that I wore the charcoal and navy-blue "Lounge Suit" (= 2-Piece-Suit) with a tie and black calf derbies like everybody else in Frankfurt, Germany, in the financial industry.

Then back in consulting I had to invest into my wardrobe and opted for MTM three-piece-suits with a second pair of trousers to flexibly change the waistcoats between the suits. With 4 blue suits, medium-grey, light-grey and two needle-strip suits (blue with white, blue with burgundy :) ) the flexibility is very high.

Also a three-piece suit has the advantage to drop the jacket and sit in a meeting or video conference with the waistcoat with a pocket square to look professional.

The waistcoats in blue and grey towns, also in burgundy, can be interchanged between suits to create very versatile three-piece ensambles.

In winter the three-piece-suit is also warmer with the waistcoat.

Another question:

Does one have to wear Oxfords with the three-piece-suit? I hardly get my high instep into Oxfords, and thus mostly have plain-toe black, brown, cognac, midnigh-blue and burgundy Derbies.

Also hear in Germany the Derby is most often worn with a suit, because derby shoes are sold in large department stores like "Peek & Cloppenburg", "Anson's" and others wear the average office employee buys his/her wardrobe. These are usually all cemented shoes unfortunately.

Also do you wear Oxfords or Derbys with Borguing together with your three-piece suit?

I am asking as I find the standard British Captoe-Oxford in Black plain boring. Rather a nice Adelaide, Balmoral or Quarter-Brogue Oxford or Derby is what I prefer, to wear it also with Chinos and Jeans for Business Casual and Smart Casual.

Best regards

Pascal

Hello An Acute Style,

the cloth looks great. I am also looking for such a cloth for a summer sports jacket.

Are you standing for the photo in the cafeteria of a school, or some kind of public building?

A teacher in a three-piece-suit would be rare sight today in US or German schools if my guess is correct, albeit fashionable.

Enjoy your day and best regards

Thanks. I’m standing in my classroom. I teach high school math. Fabric is linen. Suit is from Brooks Brothers.

About shoes with a three piece. You can wear whatever you want. Oxfords are the traditional choice, but loafers, bulchers, and/or medallions can work given the context.

I’m wearing loafers as the suit is linen and more casual IMO.
