Unfortunately that's the exact situation I am in... It sucks but my salary is so small I can't help it If i want a place to live in the city. I make 38K pretax

If I lived in NYC and I want to, I would want an reasonable cost of living raise... But being unemployed and only source of income is from the internet that's not an option... I've lived mostly on my own in shady areas to the complete ghetto. Just stayed in my own business, polite to everyone I came by, renter insurance, doberman, and a Sig Sauer 556. I never had any problems just pride of being on my own.
