Injury = cannot work out = how to stay lean?

I had a minor surgery done yesterday. Basically to remove an infection from my right sole. Now there a gaping 2 mm hole in the skin of my sole.

Pre-surgery, I was hobbling around like a crippled man. Now I can walk properly but the doctor has advised me to take 1 week more off to let my foot heal.

Now I'm a distance runner (30-40 miles per week). Its already been 3 weeks sans a workout. and I'm feeling fat and unathletic and my midsection definately looks flabbier.

For reference I'm 5'10...160 lbs. Lean, athletic runners type body.

So any recommendations?

Pay attention to diet. Inactivity isn't going to pack on the pounds over a short term.

Ice water in the morning green tea extract and breathing exercises should keep you lean until your back in action

Food is fuel, since you aren't doing your normal activities, cut the amount of fuel you are taking in.

Diet is all. period. If you put in 40 miles/week then your body isn't going to adjust over night. Eat good and clean and at maintenance and all should be good.

Can you bike? A month won't kill you. Go on vacation.

This is the most important thing. Just let the wound heal and come back better than ever.

Pilates like exercises on the floor might be doable. It's surprisingly tough. This chick has pretty good workouts. Wish she had better taste in music. http://www.blogilates.com/workoutindex

Avoid excess carbohydrates. Even inactive, if you consume fewer than 150g carbs/day, you should be fine.

No sugars/sweets/pasta.

Do as much as you can. Pushups? Planks? these would involve you being on your forefoot. Look into Yoga leg extensions. Just don't push the area affected - let it heal properly; you'll spring back fast after you convalesce.

Let me guess now, paleo, 'fat-burning-zone', insulin makes you fat - am I hitting the spot man?

if you're not working out, you won't need carbs.
