Trading in / upgrading diamonds & jewlery in NYC - help!

Anyone have any experience with this?
Long story short - my wife receved a recently deceased relative's diamond ring. We would like to some how work an exchange where she trades in her original engagement ring for a new setting and upgraded wedding band.
What % of value can you really expect when attempting to do a transaction like this? I suppose we could just try to sell the original diamond straight out, but that seems like it carries all kinds of other issues as well.

If you trade it in, you will only get the wholesale price of the old diamond. Not sure what else you can do. I did it recently but used a family member who does this for a living. Although I got the wholesale price for my old diamond, I did get a better price on the new diamond - probably close to what a strore would pay for it.
