Fashion = Conspicuous consumption. Also to showcase particular values/belonging to specific groups. It's a communication technique, and a fairly effective one. Also, for those who claim that they adapt a particular fashion/style completely without an intention to send a message, that in turn is communicating a certain thought. (Look at me, I wear what I want, or Look at me, I don't care what I wear). As McLuhan said: The medium is the message.

Fashion is for perpetuating a business model. Style is how a person wears their clothes. They aren't mutually exclusive, but they aren't necessarily linked either.
