Aestheticism? (Refined beauty for its own sake.)
Hedonism? (See porn threads.)
Does it serve a similar purpose as slang? (Identifying social subgroups.)

Is this even a fair question? Should the question be, "Why bother with fashion?"

LQTM I was going to post this in DT, but thought that someone would eventually link to lemon party. I see the question as more of a poll, "Why do you bother with fashion?"

I lean heavily towards "slang" with knock-ons to sex and/or money through fetishism. Fashion-as-slang explains why a 'great dresser' from an unfamiliar social context can confront you on the sidewalk as a complete enigma.

As any other artistic medium, it may extend into all of these things. Hell, the purpose of painting and sculpture has an aspect of social ranking. Hedonism's a bit of a stretch, dunno what kind of clothes you wear...
