Yes, do it. Life is too short.

The older you get, the less acceptable it becomes to be broke, have a shitty job or live with your parents. 2 more years of school is nothing. Just finish

^dude tell me about it. when I used to work @ a fast food restaurant, we had a guy that had been working there for eleven years. Great guy and everything but, I just felt sorry for him. everyday I went to work I thought "If I end up like that guy someone just please kill me." it was really sad. I'm not sure if he works there anymore but i hope that he's doing better.

aside; he tried to bang this super hot 19yr old (this chick looked like eva angelina) at the time and failed. he would've been surprised if he figured out I messed around with this chick lolol.

FWIW: Everyone always says "People who 'take a semester off' never finish college/get their degrees."

I took a semester off approximately two years ago; it was a much-needed break, but I was ready to go back to school after 50-60 hour work weeks, and I just graduated a little over a month ago.

Yeah I did the same. If the kid said "I'm overwhelmed with school and I need some time to relax and get my head together," I would say go ahead, you're still young. But if he wants to spend the time collecting expensive clothes and traveling then I would say putting that off for a couple of years is the best way to go. He would probably appreciate the travel more with more education and will probably have slightly better taste in clothes by that point as well.

Get an internship so you can work, make some money, get away from school but more importantly, gain experience that you wouldn't have otherwise and will need.

Employers want experience and will more often than not pick the one with more of it between two academically similar candidates.

You need experience to get a job. But you need a job to get experience.

Internships through your faculty is usually the easiest way to break that nasty cycle.

That's what I'm doing right now smile.gif

^^^ where are you interning right now?

I have a job with a company that will pay for my education but, the only problem is that I'm not sure if I want to stick with it. How can I decide what I want to do with my life when I can't even decide on what I want for lunch?

I'm interning for Alberta Health Services, the provincial health care body for Alberta, Canada.

I don't think you'll know until the feeling hits you. Set off doing what you enjoy doing and what you foresee will allow you to live in the lifestyle you wish to lead. Try things out along the way.

I don't think there's an easy answer unfortunately. And I only know this too well, being in the same position as you!

In my experience, most of my mates who took the semester off never came back. Mostly, I believe, they weren't doing well at school or didn't really want to pursue the degree they did and working somewhere else or doing something, anything actually held their appeal more; startup company, bible camp, philanthropy.

If you want to travel, buy stuff or make money, just finish school - there's a whole lifetime full of that ahead of you to do that while balancing little things like rent, mortgage, shrink and alimony bills.

And about the job - you really won't know until you do it. That's why it's best at the end of every year to evaluate if you're hitting your own goals. No career counselor, mentor, boss, or HR department will be able to tell that for you and certainly don't rely on the company or a trade organization (P Eng, CMA, some IT certification) to lay out your career path for you. You're the best person to look out for yourself.

Just wanted to echo what others have said already about taking time off only if it is for the right reasons. For me in retrospect, my biggest regret in college was not pursuing a study abroad program through the school. It would've been a great way to earn credits *and* travel. It's something I wanted to do when I started college but kept pushing it back and before you know it, I'm done with college and out in the real world. Now I'm wondering when the next prime opportunity will arise for me.

So my suggestion would be to look into study abroad program during the summer or winter break. If you can find something that directly correlates to your major, all the better. You can definitely leverage that into finding a good internship (which leads to full time positions, even if it's not with the same firm). Employers definitely like to see a well rounded student. So don't make the same mistake as I did :P No mater how busy you are, it's nothing compared to working full time.

Just found a great article on a gap year... a lot of the thoughts and findings are relevant even for someone already in university!

King, A. (2011). Minding the gap? Young people’s accounts of taking a Gap Year as a form of identity work in higher education. Journal of Youth Studies, 14(3), 341-357.
