Not sure if it could be implemented on this system, but I've seen similar on other forums where the rules were hidden for those with a certain number of posts (and they were actually in a java "popup" with lots of obnoxious flashing so you couldn't miss them)

J emailed to see if that section can be "collapsed" by the user.

Cheers,

Fok.

I see the potential in the new layout but it is very large and doesn't scale well. There's a lot of wasted space, and space is valuable. For one, the more I have to scroll, the farther I am from your sponsors and Frontpage content.

Like on the left mid grey area with the avatars, there an inch of empty space being wasted. Limit custom title lengths and reclaim that prime real estate. Or, why is there nothing between the red flag and the green thumb in *every post* and it's always below the post/join date? Put the online/offline indicator inline with the username, a green dot vs a grey dot is pretty obvious and you can have descriptive hovers. All the info that goes above the first post on the page, compress by half.

I'm at 1650 x 1080 and can only see two posts at a time, I'm afraid to see what this would look like on a phone.

On the other hand, 100 posts/page and the hover over the Styleforvm logo are sweet!

We are looking at a lot of these options. The problem is that on a system this big, changing small things actually take time. But we are definitely advocating for some of these changes. Some things, like fonts and colors, can change faster than others. So, thanks for your suggestions and your patience.

I will agree it is more "informative", in the sense that I can see what each classified contains.

Part of what made my Buy/Sell browsing experience so successful was the fact that typically, I didn't know what I would be looking for. So I would just browse until something caught my eye.
Thus, I'd scan a bunch of FS thread titles, and try clicking on one to see if there was anything good. This wasn't that tedious. You do have a fair point when you say that the new changes in Buy/Sell make it far easier to see what is actually being sold, rather than clicking and spending time to read through it, but I think you guys offset this gain because:
1. One item per listing means that multiple items sales threads evolve into 10+ classified postings.
2. Showing more information per classified means less available postings to view and glance at once. I actually get fatigued trying to go through the Buy/Sell forums, there's just too much text, pictures, and spacing. I can't quickly scan and glane my way through them.

There's a reason why browsing ebay sucks. There's way too many listings and way too many pages to go through. At least with the old system, with combined seller threads, and what seemed to be a good balance of visible threads per page, I could get through 5-8 pages of the FS threads quickly. Now 5-8 pages is more like 8-13 pages, and a far slower process at that.

Does anyone echo my sentiment?

Hope this helps and good luck with everything else.

Hate the new B/S. What makes me love the old format was that I could browse the threads that I'm interested in. I don't want to see Express shirt descriptions or Guidi boots pictures and prices. As above poster mention, I like going through epic threads. In b/s, I seldom try to find a certain item/brand, and I like the fact that I found an item that I like at a good price. This also prompts impulse purchases!

In current format, its like having to go through the whole Ebay Men's Clothing sections and it sucks.

Please Fok, please please go back to the old format. Or at least keep the "archive" sections alive and let users decide which format they wanna use. I am in total belief that majority would prefer the old format. You can keep the new classified one for signature listings which are way cool.

I fucking hate sufu supermarket as we can't even see the whole thread title, thereby missing out on good deals. Used to love SF b/s for being more concise and a much better experience. But if the classifieds are being permanently implemented, I think I would go to sufu more often.

Not going to happen

i also feel this way. (as in, hate the new classifieds)

been whinging over a few threads now, but i really feel like all the utility that sf used to provide is harder to use now, and all that stuff i didn't care about got better.
I wonder if anyone else who saw the 2.0 sneak preview has the same hate for the new B&S.

As a multiple-item seller, I can understand the disdain but as a buyer I think it's great to have auctions more organized and spaced apart. I don't have to go into threads to see if an item is in my size, if the price is even reasonable, scroll through crap I don't want, etc.

I honestly thought it would have been an instant hit with the rest of the forum once it went public.
The site is much faster and feels a lot snappier for me at least. The sidebar is annoying but since it is only at the top im sure I and everybody else will get used to it.

I have mixed feelings about the b&s system. With the old system i wasted a lot of time searching through threads only to find that none of it was in my size but at the same time it was kinda fun knowing that you might come across a gem. One thing it definitely needs is a Size search option, if you implement this it will make scanning through all the junk a breeze.
Sizes can be solved by enforcing everyone to put sizes in the beginning of thread title.

Who- it is great for buyer if you know what you want.

The old system is not coming back. We had a combined 180+ pages of complaints about the old system in the last 18 months. People wanted more complete listings, the system was being gamed every which way, and so on, with the result that we had to enforce some rather arbitrary and byzantine rules.

You can easily search the new system by categories, which is a big step up from the old system. If you are not interested in express shirts or Guidi boots, scrolling past a thumbnail of them is not significantly harder than scrolling past a thread that had "Guidi boots" in the title.

Also, their are now 100 items per page, which is huge. If possible, I will make it an even larger number of items per page, which you can then subset by category.

That the size field was not implemented was a big oversight. We will look to rectifly this, and perhaps add a field for brand as well, but that will, unfortunately, take some time to implement, since things are harder to fix than to build. In the interim, we will merely ask sellers to list sizes, which is in their interest anyway, and really, works best in a one item/one listing

I think that it is good for both the buyer and the sellers, for those looking for a specific item, and for browsers.

Sellers have more exposure - no longer will a gem be hidden away in a thread because the title field was not long enough to list it, and buyers can easily see what is for sale, the price, a partial description, etc... This is a benefit for buyers as well, and the 100 listings per page make browsing easier.

If you wish to see what a particular seller has for sale, listings from the same seller are listed in the right hand column.

I would urge you to give the Buying and selling sections a change before dismissing them.
It seems easy enough to glide over the express shirts and guidi boots, but wait a few months and the listing becomes unbearably never-ending and people will get sick looking at the pics and descriptions. Not a lot of people have the time to scroll down and they just want the executive summary of the thread.

Honestly fok, I don't knw if you ever really browse the old b/s (spent a lot of time in it). I post mostly in swd and I think you said most abuses came from the mc power sellers. In swd at least it is working perfectly for me.

Well, I'll stop my rant here and my last wish is to keep the b/s archive open and let users choose which format they wanna use.

Thanks for reading, fok. The efforts have not gone unnoticed.

Is there a way to decrease the height of each post? There's just way too much scrolling in the new format

Is there a way to force an interstitial page view of the rules before someone can click through to list an item for sale? That way it would appear every time someone wants to sell an item but you could remove it from the main B&S page so it doesn't appear when you're looking to buy, or just browsing the B&S forum.

One note on the categories.

One is 'suits and blazers'

One is 'coats and jackets'

This will confuse, and lead to some people listing sport coats as outerwear.

Better:

'suits, sport coats & blazers'

'outerwear'

You may even separate suits entirely.
