Styleforum Moving to New System! - Page 11

For those experiencing slowness, please see this thread- thanks.

Just a small comment on the F/S section.
I like how there are now pictures and small descriptions and you've limited it to only one item,
but in many ways I liked the old system better. There's far too much space taken up per posting, and since users can only post one item at a time, that makes going through F/S items a real drag. Lots of "wasted space" in the sense that we could be adding more postings, but instead we are getting more descriptions. I understand that ideally, we'd be able to balance between the two, but I always enjoyed the fact that I could go through a ton of FS listings per page in a quick glance. It feels much slower now, given how few listings are listed per page.
As for allowing one item, vs multiple items, I'm still unsure about that. In a way, you've gotten rid of clutter, and in a way, it'll only increase the number of postings per seller.

PS Avatars are really big as well, leading to "wasted space" but I'm sure this will be addressed.

Problem with the "for sale" section: the search doesn't work. This is extremely important when you've got a 1 item per ad system, I need to be able to type in a brand name and find every listing by that brand. I.e. there are some guidi boots posted in there, but if I do a "search this forum" for "guidi", I get no results.

Agreed, the old format was a lot quicker to browse.

Because the site just launched, the "Search Index" is still building, which means that search is still "learning" the content of the site. Not every thread has been indexed yet- this should improve over the next couple of days.

I was also going to say this. I know that new formats take a while to get used to, but feel that the new buying and selling format is a big step back.

I know this is nitpicking, but I think there should just be one "default" avatar. that way mentally I (and others) associate it as a default one. right now there are a bunch, so I keep thinking two posters are actually the same person at first glance because they have the same avatar.

Shoot me now... I hate the new forum format. Another site I frequent switched to this same exact format and it sucks. It is still slow and laggy months later. Just seems too cluttered and the side bar is annoying as hell. Don't really care about ads, but hate this format. Doesn't matter what I think though it is here to stay. Just wish people would realize that simple and clean is always better.

I could dig up the other posts for you if you'd like.

As ADHD as I may be I am not ADHD enough to tolerate this new format. Good lord....I have tried to peruse this forum 9 or 10 times in the last day and have given up each time. This makes AAAC look clean and organized. Have I finally reached the age where I get crotchety at the suggestion of change or is it really this bad? shog[1].gif

Edit - although I have mixed feelings on the B&S format I do like the ability to search by category.

Hate it. Slow (I have IE8) cluttered, hard to navigate, hard to tell when new posts have been done, adds seem randomly placed.
Agree with above, simple is always better.

Lol nah dude you aren't it is pretty bad. I hate this platform. It pissed me off so much I basically stopped browsing the other site that switched. I'm trying to stick it out, but this platform is cluttered to all hell and I have no idea why anyone would switch to this. This is the myspace of forum platforms. Shits all over the place.

Actually, I can't take it anymore. I, at first, thought it was just the buying and selling thread, but you've effectively killed my favorite site. The good news though is I should save a grip on clothes purchases.

I agree that this is a pretty miserable forum layout. Either put a front page site independent of your forums, and write content that way, but the whole making articles on the front page link to glorified forum posts etc. looks pretty amateur, and what I suppose the opposite of what people initially expected or wanted from a Styleforum which more original content.

It just seems like you wanted the best of everything, ebay, CNN front page, and forums and wrapped it all in a gigantic wrapper hoping it would work. There's reasons forums are separate from main sites. This is borderline unusable.

This is pretty much my feeling too.

I've been browsing for a couple of hours now and getting the hang of things, I still like the no-nonsense old SF better but I can deal with the cosmetic changes and other minor temporary annoyances because some of the new features are pretty awesome and I'm sure there's even more to discover. But...

But I can't get over how intrusive the sidebar is. It just looks wrong imho, like a coding mistake, it doesn't make sense visually or UX-wise to me. Some of its content is redundant and the useful parts (PMs and reviews) seem gimmicky there compared to the trade off. I'm pretty sure I'm actually getting subconsciously pissed off at the affiliates for ruining my browsing experience shog[1].gif.

If the sidebar was fixed so that the affiliates banners would always stay on screen (not that I'd like that...), I could understand the logic behind it at least . Right now it doesn't seem to offer any advantage over the old top and bottom of the page banner placement (which was pretty much the perfect balance between visibility and clutter imho).

So, I know we're still in the tweaking phase and I fully aknowledge the ginormous work and PITA that thing must've been/is but I feel like that damned sidebar takes away much from all the improvements for no real purpose, and that's a damn shame.

I was just over @ sufu and it felt... nice and straightforward, yeah...

Less but better. Less is more. I'm not mad, I'm just sad.
