I just bought a pair of, what are to me, grail shoes, the Brooks Brothers Peal & Co cordovan boots .

My problem is that I see scuff marks and some scratches on the boots. I've already done some research on SF on what to do for repairs.

However, given that these are $1000 plus boots, my questions are:

1. Is this normal? I.e. is it normal for new cordovan boots to come with scuffs and scratches?

2. Even though one can - apparently- buff the scratches out, are the scuffs and scratches permanent and one needs to buff them out on a regular basis?

It's just a little puzzling. These are my first pair of cordovans so I'm not sure what to expect. I sure as heck wouldn't accept the same issues for a 'normal' pair of $1000 shoes.

Your help and suggestions are much appreciated.

No one but you can decide if you should keep them or not. I would think NEW would mean no scratches, can you live with the scratches? As soon as you wear them they will start to get some character. Buff them up put them on and enjoy them. If its going to bug you send them back. Enjoy!

I should have been more precise. I don't want help with whether I should keep them or not; I agree that is my call.

I was looking for advice on what's 'normal' with shells as I have no prior experience.

The speed hooks are scratching the leather. The question is why doesnt BB put their shoes in plastic bags OR inside the shoe bags that are provided with some of their shoes including this pair. I have purchased several new pairs of Alden shell boots and they always come to me in brand new, scratch free condition. Alden, for all the **** they receive for QC, do a great job of packaging their shoes to prevent these scratches.
