A lot of tall, lanky men suffer from Marfan's Syndrome, which can cause cardiovascular problems...although I dont' think Gathers or Lewis had Marfan's.

its athletes usually young from 15-20's that suddenly die from HCM (hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy). the thing is athletes naturally can have enlarged hearts (hypertrophy) due to their training - so even with a chest x-ray you can only assume that their enlarged hearts are due to the training. and even with an ECG you will still see lowered and even erratic heart rates due to their training. its just not practical to do all the diagnostics (24hour monitoring/mri/ecg/chest x-ray) on all HS athletes to figure out who has HCM.

someone like Kevin Durrant is the classic marfan's description.. they suffer more from aneurysm type injuries (think tears in their major blood vessels leading to and from the heart) because of defect(s) in molecular levels of their connective tissues in vessels.

The guy died because he did coke. Thats not something Id get all that sad about.

Personally, I think stories like Roberto Clemente or Thurman Munson dying in plane crashes much more "sad." But, to each his own......

I agree. Len Bias's death was "unfortunate" but it wasn't "sad" or "tragic" to me. A sad or tragic death is one that is totally unexpected and one in which the deceased was not culpable in their own death.

Len Bias made bad decisons and choices in life that led to his death. He killed himself. Unfortunate but not sad...
