Gone 25 years ago today. His death is still the saddest sports story of my lifetime. Everybody in the DC metropolitan area (and probably Boston as well) knows where they were when they heard the awful news. For those to young to remember, go to YouTube and check out the grainy highlights. He was an extraordinary, extraordinary basketball player.

My favorite player was Reggie Lewis, I even have a signed jersey with him and rick fox .

I just remember my dad being really depressed about 1986 and I wondered why because the celtics were awesome and won the title that year. By the time 1987 rolled around and they lost to the lakers he explained how this could be the end of the celtics championship runs for a long time (i was a naive little kid thinking the C's would be good forever).

I know you liked the guy, but "saddest sports story of your life?"

The guy died because he did coke. Thats not something Id get all that sad about.

Personally, I think stories like Roberto Clemente or Thurman Munson dying in plane crashes much more "sad." But, to each his own......

the saddest sports story of my lifetime has been ongoing for the past 15 or so years down at Camden Yards. And it's not over yet.

This is an interesting piece re-assessing the Bias tragedy.

Was he known to have a cocaine habit before he died or did it come out of nowhere?

The narrative at the time was that he OD'd the first time he tried coke. Over time it's come to light that Bias partied HARD and frequently and may have been mixed up with high-level dealers like Rayful Edmond. The stuff he was doing that night was a lot purer than most street blow at that time.

no, op, reggie and hank gathers are tragedies. some dopey cokey spending his money before he's got it is just unfortunate.

There are a ton of coke rumors surrounding Reggie too.

If you listen to the 911 call, the caller tells the dispatcher that its Len Bias, the dispatcher snaps "It doesn't matter who it is!!" Sounded like a fat redneck.

Yeah, Roberto Clemente dying in a plane crash carrying supplies to earthquake victims is a tragedy, not some party-hearty kid killing himself. Len Bias' story is sad (especially so for Celtics fans), but self-inflicted damage doesn't qualify as a tragedy in my book.

Shit, I remember where I was when I heard the news (hotel room in Orlando, waiting to go to Disney), and I wasn't all that into basketball, yet.

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is genetic... hank gathers,, reggie lewis and the other shocking deaths that happen so suddenly... you can't escape your own genetics. that shit was tragic because we saw them have cardiac episodes right before our eyes.
